It'll be nice to see the slabbed coin when it comes back.

Quote: no disrespect intended, nor taken. As the original poster mentioned it being on its way to grader, it was moot point. And Agreed, as resolute as pictures are and few diagnostics checking out, it cannot be ascertained 100% without having it in hand. For you and I, Fred (and even the OP since there's enough data available online for someone to learn the explicit diagnostics), slabbing is optional. That said, even if I were positive I'd be having the coin slabbed in favor of my heirs. If not me down the road, someone following me would likely be selling the coin. If I wanted to keep it in an album - and golly, I'd sure love a raw 1916-D in an album aside I'd then be forced to collect the whole series - then the coin would be subject to a specific paragraph in my will, directing my executor to have it slabbed before the chosen heir received it.

Quote: OP, compare the two faces very carefully. All 1916-D's have some slight die rotation; if yours is Die #1, it will have a very little rotation to the left of vertical. Understanding that we describe this stuff using a clock analogy, this one should be rotated to 11:45 when 12:00 is straight up. Yes, it did have this rotation. SPOILER ALERT: When I was at a local coin show, I took this dime to the ICG senior grader Randy Campbell (I believe this is his name)and he took a look at this coin and confirmed that it is indeed authentic.

Randy Campbell thinks it's authentic? Case closed.

Quote: And Randy didn't say send it to ICG? Not necessarily, if he was talking to a 15-year-old kid who didn't have the money for a slab at the moment.

Whoops!
16 D Merc, Please show some pictures of the slab once you get it, hopefully you find other valuable in those $3 bins. I can't find those $3 bins in my area.

Okay Mac! Well he technically he did say send it to ICG, but more in a "That will cost $12 plus shipping to be graded" kind of way. I feel kind of bad, Randy was a really nice guy, for not sending it to ICG, but I just prefer one of the Big Three.

If this was me, I would have bought the entire box instead of just the 1916D so I wouldn't be taking advantage of some poor old widow or something cosigning the coins to the little antique shop to raise some money or taking advantage of a small business owner just so I can have more material possessions. Obviously someone didn't know what they were selling and I would feel guilty walking up to the counter and handing the seller $3 for a coin worth a lot. It is not like this was bought this from someone knowledgeable who made a mistake who honored the mistake because they could. I have thought about that before if I encountered a key date in a box of coins sold at a flea market, I would simply buy it all, good with the bad. You could go back there and buy that box though.

I would have done this, but I simply did not have enough money for this. Once I saw that it was a 1916-D all I did was put it to the side, I would have felt bad had I just bought that coin, but I did buy around A $1 in dimes. Also, over the past 6 months I have probably spent over $200 there.

Eh, that shop is always there. If that was me I would sell it. I would then go back to the shop and buy some more if my conscious bugged me. Same thing with the guy who bought a key Morgan, for $17. I would sell it and see if I could buy something from the seller if I felt guilty about it. I like coins too but it is what it is, stuff.
