Other than the last coin (the Guardian of the Gorge) I am in awe of this set. There are few coins out there that can match the level of detail once you have them in hand. The Guardian is pretty sad, the Mint didn't even copy the entire painting. Why bother doing half measures. There are other Franz Johnston paintings that would have worked great. I will continue to collect the set but it seems that the Dark side is calling out to me and I can no longer resist. At $200 to $300 for the box on ebay I'll be selling mine. I'll be looking for proof Libertads with my new found wealth.

IMO the Carmichael coin wins hands down in terms of appearance. I know it's a bunch of houses but they did such an amazing job frosting and layering, you have to see yourself to appreciate it. Surprised it would go for less than issue ever.

100% with somecoinguy The carmichael coin is the best. I'm also most dissapointed with the gorge.... Not only that the magic of the original painting is completly lost... But also coinage techniques that RCM usually applies are missed completely. Compared to the previous four, I'm missing the passion in the gorge for this brilliant idea of putting heritage art into commemorative coins. Sorry this #5 is a fail!

If anyone is interested, I have several cases & the coins on sale at ebay (same account name) for what I think is a very reasonable price considering what the case is selling for on its own.

this reminds me of a ancient chinese fable.
"买椟还珠 A man from the state of Chu wanted to sell a precious pearl in the state of Zheng. He made a casket for the pearl out of the wood from a magnolia tree, which he fumigated with spices. He also decorated it with kingfisher feathers. A man of the state of Zheng bought the casket and gave him back the pearl."

@Pixu, Great photos! Amazing a good photo can make the coin seem that much nicer. If you aren't looking for the Guardian, that coin isn't too bad.
But I have a vote for the Varley still.

How many people will have the complete set with box when the series is done, do you know ? Does 3,500 sets sound about right ?
