a seller on ebay is listing alot of different dates of Mercury dimes for 3.50 a peice. in general is that a fair price? he says he is a hurricane sandy survivor and needs the money for repairs to his home so I guess if thats the case my money would be helping him anyways.

Too much. You can get them at spot which is like $2.20 right now. Don't believe all these seller stories. He may be telling the truth but who knows he's there to make money like the rest of the eBayers. I would pass.

Way too much over spot, he'll laugh if you buy them lol, just pass. I'm sure there are plenty of other sellers out there which are more worthy of your business.

Be patient and you can find good deals under $3 on ebay. Keep in mind shipping when looking, it's very important. If a seller gives discounts the more lots you win, try to figure out the cost per coin if you win multiple lots. I too like buying silver dimes on ebay due to my present location. I have been very fortunate and have actually won some around spot, but I never spend more than $3 on any one dime, this includes shipping into the total price. Good luck, maybe we'll be bidding on the same auctions.

look for combined shipping and buy more than one from the same seller and you can get them near or under spot

Depends what condition the dimes are in and what dates are being offered. If these are collection grade coins (unc) you might pay more then spot. If you are looking for junk dimes you can get them for much less. I just paid $3 per dime but I bought a roll of uncirculated dimes. No way I could get those for spot.

Common dates below high AU is over priced, but anything above that maybe fine for the price, condition is everything.

If you want common date circulated Mercury dmes for around spot price don't buy them off of ebay. It might look like a good deal but when it comes down to the final seconds of an auction the snipers come in and most lots end at or over what you could expect to pay offline. You then have to pay for shipping also. The best place for buying 90% silver coins at the lowest prices are local coin shops, coin shows and sometimes the flea market. Ed ANA LM-3175

Depends on the coins. Making a general no way they are only worth melt statement is wrong. If they are VF or better, 3.50 is not a bad price. Below that, yes, the later years are meltish and that would be a high price.

Most lots of Mercury dimes sold on ebay are well worn pre 1940 or average circulated 1940-45 dimes. Most pre 1940 Mercury dimes grading VF or higher don't fall into the common date category. People who actively collect Mercury dimes should already know this and one look in a Red Book or at any price guide one would see that pre 1940 VF or better Mercury dimes are worth more than their intrinsic value. I bought a lot of Mercury dimes from ebay a couple years ago. I was only looking for VF or better grades. Grade definitely makes a difference in the price. There are some deals out there, but if you just want silver then either buy larger lots of coins or look in dealers junk boxes. I don't know why people sell singles of low grade Mercury dimes on ebay. I guess they don't know.

At coin shows almost any Mercury dime in the worst condition would go for about $3. Haven't seen one for less in years now and I go to about 2 to 4 coin shows a Month. One dealer at a local flea market sells beat up, worn ones for about $3 also. Many of the local coin stores for more than that. If ebay, add in postage, handling, fees, lost in mail, etc.
