@Anjohl Funny you should mention the design of our coins down here. We never started having the current series issues until they took a lesson from the RCM producing so many varieties on quarters. I think the US mints saw an opportunity to bring in more money by mimicking the RCM. |

What does the Commonwealth really stand for these days anyway.........nothing more than a way for Britian to try hang onto it's control on some of the world and to have a Commonwealth games........I am of British descent, but I am CANADIAN first and foremost and have watched for the past 50 years as we "bow" our heads and let other countries lead as we step in line behind instead of being proud (which we should be). Get your heads out of the sand, ask the young generation.........we have our ties to the past and now that we (as a country) have enough history of our own, it is time to step out from under the British umbrella. For the question about removing British symbols from our flags, if the "symbol" is truly British (union jack), then I think it should be replaced (heck we did it with CANADA's flag, so move on/ahead !

Thanks for piping up, good to know that the young generation does appreciate/understand the importance of history as well........hope you liked all the War of 1812 issues as to me, that is one of the most defining moments in our history, where we beat the U.S. in the War of 1812 (heck, Canada is the only country to have ever BURNT down the White House !) and then we were nice enough to let them have some of their northern states back. Yet most people I talk to don't even know about the War of 1812........wish the Mint/government would have done more to promote (even with the Queen's effigy on them).....

I agree with that...
My sources are from Ontario, Newfoundland, BC, Quebec and Alberta.
Newfoundland has the most support for them... Followed by Ontario... Quebec is the least support.. Then Alberta.
I personally love History, so I know a lot about the War of 1812.
Also, I am from Ontario, but have recently moved back from Alberta (lived there for 6 years)

Interesting.........just curious as I was born/raised in Saskatchewan, lived in Calgary for 17 years and for the past 3 years living in Ontario and I noticed a vast difference in people's opinions East/West.......thx !

I have heard that the State Quarter program was directly inspired by the incredible provincial program we had in 1992. I have that set in silver proof, and they are stunning. They were also one of the three series, along with the 67 centennial and early 80's dollars that originalyl piqued my interest in the hobby. That being said, I think the RCM goes MUCH too far with the variety of quarter designs. I get the value in terms of seigniorage, but I have not found any of the series after the colored olympic coins worth collecting, nor any between those and the 92's. The US state and ATB are wonderful coins, and very collectible, while being very useful as education aids. I can imagine a teacher starting collections for each student, as they learn about a state or event, they get a quarter for their set, etc, etc. I really wish we would put out coins honoring figures from our history. |

I admit at times I think the RCM goes too far also. They almost make a new design to commemorate each time the Queen sneezes! And I am not sure, but maybe they are going to start more commemorating historic Canadian people. They made the Brock and Tecumseh quarters this year (cool designs). How about dumping the Monarchy. Well past time! Lots of interesting CANADIANS could grace the obverse of our coins.
