I hope this next one offends no one here, but I am known for saying what is on my mind. I hope when Charles gets the throne, He does what the Queen's uncle did and immediately passes the throne on. The reason I say this is b/c I remember when Charles got divorced, the Queen was very upset with this, wishing the royal family's reputation on the throne to be one not including a divorced monarch. I also agree Charles is a little "different."

I believe in many ways Charles is already somewhat functioning as the King. Hopefully that's good enough for him and he will pass on the crown to William when his turn comes around.

Charles has grown on me over the years and I do like him. I think if the monarchy is to survive, it needs to continue to modernize and that means bringing a young, keen fella like Will into the fold.

Even when a child I thought George V's effigy was exactly what a king "should" look like. His effigy is the kind of picture a child gets in their head when they are thinking about a story of a king in a castle.

Couldn't agree more!

When I was young my folks had a cottage on the north shore of Lake Erie. At night, we could see a glow from the shore to the south, which we supposed might be from Erie, PA.

No doubt it was Erie. Around 45 minutes or so north of Erie on I-90 - more towards a small town called North East, PA, you can see Canada most of the time.

I've never really cared for anything royal family related. What have they done for me personally? Nothing I can think of besides appear on TV waving around and well, that's about it.

I can see what you say in that on a day to day basis, there has been no impact. However, as an outsider, I can tell you that a larger impact has been made. We in the US (who take time to see the rest of the world around us), not having a monarch (well - someone wants to be right now!) tend to place an heir of being regal on countries with good monarchs (as opposed to monarchs the commoners don't like b/c the monarch are cruel). From the time I was a kid, Canada was always a special place to me for a lot of reasons, but I know a main one of these reasons was b/c Canada still had their own Queen. This was something of legend and fairy tales. And to top it off, this Queen was one one of the few royals/leaders in the world respected/liked by people not under her "rule" (such as us in the US).

The royal family gave/gives Canada its own amazing "air" of bring regal.

There are many other reasons I like Canada (hey - you gave us Captain Kirk! ), not the least of which is that the overall Canadian mindset is more like the honorable idea that quality is something to be proud of and giving people their money's worth seems still to be much important and meaningful than down here.

Don't get me wrong, as evidenced by the CCF family, there are a lot of great people down here. But having been immersed in the Canadian culture(s!) I found/find the overall Canadian attitude towards his fellow man to be one that it took 9/11 to rekindle and make the norm once again in the States.

This always brings a tear to my eye not only b/c of its truth, but b/c of the source...

And, BTW, I have never been to Oz, but the Royal's influence there has also made me feel like if Canada and the US are sisters, then Oz surely is a close cousin!

Over the past few years I've been visiting American cities like Chicago, Los Angeles and New York. I've always been astounded by the genuine friendliness of the people I've encountered in the very large American cities, and its always the people in big cities that usually get a bad rap.

@SHAFTA9a

I know you were clowning, but I will also be honest in this way. Our Bill of Rights down here has guaranteed us freedoms that, to the the extent they are here, exist nowhere else (even in Canada ).

Back some years ago when a certain "president," to a group of college students (& on TV) said, "We need to get rid of the Bill or Rights. It's an outdated document that has little bearing on today's society," I never again called him a president since this statement broke his oath of office. He also was/is never allowed on the TV screen in my house. I was outraged. And yet it was only when visiting Canada I heard anyone in the general public, while out shopping, I heard anyone intelligent enough to remark on this act of treason. The comment was, "Only in America can a guy get away with something like this and still be kept in office."

Down here the majority of the people, back then, did not care.

Yes, this is what 9/11 has done for us.

It had been 20 years since I had been in NY, NY. I swore I would never go back again b/c it was all push, shove, get out of my way, dog-eat-dog. I remember distinctly the large signs in the subway train saying, "please allow elderly and handicapped to take your seat." And I remember I was the only one - a visitor - who was doing this while more elderly had to stand.

Then just two years ago I visited again so my kids could see The Big Apple. I was SHOCKED! EVERYONE was so very nice to everyone else. I now walk with a cane. Everytime I got on the subway, I had at least 3 people jump up and offer me their seat if it was standing room only.

While on the subway, it was normal for total strangers to strike up a friendly conversation - especially if they saw you had a map of NY with you and thought they might be able to help in some way People on the street were the same way. As soon as we would pull out the map, someone would immediately stop and say, "Do you need any help finding anything?".

So I asked one of the people on the subway, who had started talking to me, "What in the world has happened here in the last 20 years? Was it 9/11 that did this? Everyone is so nice!" The person told me they had lived there all their life and that, indeed, 9/11 had a lot to do with it. but another thing was that the legal immigrants had moved in, started businesses, and they now have a larger middle class than before. He said this also is what he attributes it to.

For the first time in my life I fell in love with NY. I had always said Toronto was my favorite (oops - favourite ) city b/c of the atmosphere and people. However, NY is, to me, like a giant Mayberry, RFD and even took over the place in my heart that Toronto held. NY price gouging was even gone (which is another thing I had hated 20 years ago). The prices are totally reasonable - (like getting 2 hotdogs on the street for 1.50). The only place I saw price gouging was in the M&M store in Times Square (13.00 a pound). It seems, like our Northern Neighbors, our big city people down here now actually care about one another.

I am just thankful I grew up where I could be so acquainted with Canada (and travelled from Newfoundland to BC). Too many US people never have that opportunity.

As a Newfoundlander, I always got along with southerners, and found there to be quite a bit of cultural overlap between us.

I think we should get out of the ICE AGE and start thinking about putting a CANADIAN image on our coinage and be done with the monarchy, heck we did become our own country well over 100 years ago.......I know that putting our Prime Minister on there might not be as "nice" looking, but it is time we stood for being CANADIAN and not dwelling in our grandfather's/grandfather's past ! MAPLE LEAF FOREVER !

I disagree art and dart.

The Queen is a National Icon!

Americans can tell that stuff is Canadian when it has a maple leaf, beaver, Canadian flag or, for coins, a non-British Style monarch picture. (this comes from me asking questions to a few people... I showed the queens portrait on the Canadian cent and the Portrait on a British cent, and they could tell the Difference instantly...)

She is also (technically) the highest authority in Canada.

I vote for the 1953 image of the Queen. She was one HOT babe then.
I also agree that Kate is HOT.

As Winchild said, we southerners can readily ID Canadian coins b/c of the decidedly Canadian symbols that have always adorned them. Personally I have always thought Canadian coins (leaving out the present effigy of the Queen), have been some of the best designed worldwide. And I think its kind of cool having a country so close that still has a Queen on their coins.

We don't need the monarch. As a relatively young country we do need traditions to tie the past, present, and future.Let Liz and her family continue to appear on our coins.

I'd say that our paper (erm polymer) currency already strikes a good balance by having our monarch along with past Canadian prime ministers on our banknotes.

I've often debated whether we should push to feature Canadian figureheads on our coinage. I'd love to see Canada continue to forge its own identity in the world and this would be a major way of shaking things up. Having said all of that, are the caribou, the beaver, the maple leaf, the loon, the polar bear and the Bluenose II not strong Canadian icons in their own right? I mean, we can't get more Canadian can we?

Removing the Monarch from our currency will certainly open a huge and potentially messy debate for Canadians. Do we become a republic or do we retain our position in the Commonwealth? Why mess with tradition? I for one enjoy our ties to the Monarchy, but lets face it, we as a nation are free to conduct ourselves as we chose. The monarchy is symbolic of our history. What next, remove the Union Jack and other symbols of the British Isles from our various flags and coat of arms?

It is an embarrassment that the queen still adorns our currency, and that the governor general is the official head of state. Now I admit, it might be the novelty to a certain degree, but I find the wealth of designs on US currency fascinating. I look at the Presidential dollar program, and I imagine how great a Canadian equivalent would be, one that DID NOT have the queen on the other side.

At the same time, I think our place in the Commonwealth, or whatever it's called these days, is worth holding onto, so I can grumble and accept it.

I would really love to see Canadian figures on coins without a monarch on the other side though....
