Just a FYI, this person is likely watching our conversation. I hope they follow our advice to be more careful of what they post on Youtube. Safety deposit boxes are not that expensive and it is never a good idea to show where you have the stuff stored. I cannot find a link to the news story but I remember a few years back a teenager posted a video on Youtube where she showed a large amount of her grandmother's cash (hundreds of thousands) and theives were able to it track down. Edit: While searching Youtube for numismatic videos I also found this channel. http://www.youtube.com/user/BlueRid...ideos?view=0

I don't like making assumptions...but I'd have to say mommy and daddy's or gram and gramps money... Or trust fund/gifts, again from one of the fore-mentioned. I agree, a great collection but a total turn off for me as well.. No close ups, no highlighting single, nice examples, more of- "Haha.. Look what I have" And I agree that it is a horrible idea posting that on YouTube.. Guns or not..

When you're a kid you have no mortgage, car payments, or other large monthly bills to pay. So the vast majority of your income can go right into your hobby. Then again, my guess is as good as yours. It's just an assumption.

Comments are appropriate, but please don't lose sight of who we are around here. We don't mock for the sake of mocking.

I'm torn on this. On one hand, I like any attempt to advance the hobby and attract more people into it. On another, I don't know how my kids will be able to finance their college and yet...

I'm really surprised with some of these comments making assumptions about how he financed his collection. I'm not sure anyone here knows the situation surrounding this young man. Perhaps he has been working since he was 14 and every penny that went into this collection he earned on his own.

I think this video was made by a true collector and someone who is proud of what he's built, not someone just throwing money away like it's nothing without understanding what they're doing.

I think that this collector is clearly very passionate about coins. I admit that I made similar assumptions as some of the above commenter's but I think that YNs such as this are adding to the hobby in positive ways and possibly encouraging more young people to collect by giving them something impressive to strive towards.

I also agree with the comments that its not that wise to advertise it like that when its all linked to his fb ect. As far as how he got the money, who cares. Maybe he worked maybe he didnt, it comes off as jealous and petty to mock him for it imo

I have a whole lot of opinions on this video. Here are some of them. I do believe many of the more derisive comments in this thread are rooted in a bit of jealousy, with some justification. Jealousy that this individual much younger than most of us has a more expansive and valuable collection. Coin collecting has been in my family for ages and I started collecting when I was 5. It wasn't until I was 14 that I ever bought any coin or even gained any kind of real perception of what to collect. To have this collection at age 19, it is not entirely presumptuous to think that the individual either a)inherited most of it or b)was simply throwing money around that he did not earn. It is absurd to think that that someone that age got that amount of money through summer jobs. In the off chance that they did technically earn it all since high school graduation, how would one obtain such a position without even a college degree...rich dad. I hate to say it, but this is indeed probably a rich kid who inherited the collection or a rich kid who bought the collection. It is a pretty bad time in American society right now to be rich and to flaunt it. The video is in poor taste and as someone else already pointed out, quite arrogantly made and not particularly effective at actually showing off any numismatic gems. Since I am also fairly young, though years older than 19, I can speak for my extended generation that there is this idea that online exposure is completely ok and that they are invincible. Young people tend to way over share these days. The manner in which this video has been made and what it shows was really pushing it though. He may have indeed put himself at risk. I also think that naive attitude is something I have seen in the more "parents earned it" affluent individuals I know off. I really feel sorry for them, but many people are going to target them just for who they are and they don't even know it. Lastly, I want to comment on something else regarding this collection. I have also built a reasonably sized collection that has some decent value at a relatively young age...though my collection is smaller and less valuable and I am older than this person. I can tell ya, I have some difficulty finding coins I still want and don't know what I'll do as I get even older. There's plenty out there, but I won't just buy things for the sake of buying them. Most of the thrill in coin collecting comes from collecting and not having IMO. This guy has way too much with too much time left to try to find more.

Very careless. He's setting himself up for a robbery.

i just watched most of the video. The whole idea of showing off your collection to the world is cool, but risky. And its not any more or less pompous than the guys in the Precious metals forum who post continuous pics of their silver and gold collections. I'm not saying everyone who posts valuable coins is showing them off though. I hope that is clear.

Um, you realize that the person you're addressing is old enough to be your grandfather, right? I'd at least wait until I were old enough to vote before starting to talk about "instinct"....

While it's possible that you're correct, and being financially independent enough at a young age is not the usual case, it isn't impossible. I got my start in software design and sold my first company at 16 while still in high school, making enough to fund my coin collecting to this day, and received no financial support from my middle class family except a roof over my head. I wouldn't be surprised if the author of the video is in a similar situation, but even if they did get this as part of some inheritance, I'm glad they're using it on a hobby instead of drugs/gambling/etc.
