Quote: 0.5g gold is a Hummingbird 10k mintage for $79.95 Wow, gold is worth almost $5000 an ounce in the mints parellel universe? What a crock. And the price on the 1/10's is gone up to $250. I find it so sad that so many people get misled on the investment value of mint products. And I am not knocking mint product collectors like most of you who knowingly pay significantly more than bullion for a coin. I am likely buying the 2013 Specimen set for $50, which is a glorified uncirculated set likely to be worthless in the future, just because that Blue Winged Teal loonie speaks to me! I get it, I just wish the mint's pricing was SOMEWHERE in the vicinity of reasonable compared to the PM content of the coin. I am not asking for a 10% markup on bullion, but no more than 100% is certainly reasonable, since the mint can make the wildlife series and issue them at bullion.

I got a chance to look at the Post Offices ordering catalog last week. Remembering back when I bought the gold 1/20th oz. for $69. I just had to order the 0.5 gram Humming bird for simply the art work. I had to laugh at myself thinking I used to buy "ALL" the products. Not anymore.

Anyone care to guess the intrinsic value of a glow-in-the-dark dino coin?

I agree with you Anjohl. I gave up on Mint products about 10 years ago when prices of the stuff dropped later in about three years or so. I was annoyed when I bought proof sets, etc., $20 silver coins, like the aviation set, only to see the sale price below the mint issue price.
So, my only orders besides the $20 for $20 is the 1912-1914 Canada gold coins. At least the mark up isn't that astronomical and quite reasonable compared to the new stuff today.

When government tries to act like the private sector, things like this happens In addition, the mint won't let the public buy maples directly from them, to protect the illusion of their RETAIL products. That is the key term here, RETAIL, as in PROFIT MARGIN, and DEPRECIATION.

the RCM do have to feed artists and technicians and the like on top of what straight up bullion producers have to account for. Not disagreeing that there are over-priced RCM products of late. But really, it'll never really be worth it if you measure commemorative coins by bullion standards. Look at the RCM's history of Platinum coins. All are close to double melt value (and double melt for a $3000 coin is different from double melt for a $50 coin), but all are spectacular and worth every penny. Same can be said for many of the 1kg silver coins as well. What I do have a problem with is the spamming of issues a dozen different releases now on almost a monthly scale. RCM is turning into a slightly better Franklin Mint...

I agree with you poboxw, Though I agree with your assessment of the way the RCM appears to be going, the local coin community has asked for it that way. 'Smaller mintages' & 'more variates'. Years ago, they were complaining of the high productions (75,000 of proof sets as an example) and few commemoratives each year. Well, you got what you screamed for - Lots of different coins with mintages below 10,000 each. To do that, they need to make 12 monthly 'flyer' where before we were lucky if we got 4 a year.

You are right, Dcadon. The Mint must have a team of people just trying to think up new themes, no matter how obscure they are. Do we really care about the 100th anniversary of Arctic Exploration or the 75th anniversary of Ducks Unlimited.
Also, have you noticed none of the new January coins have sold out? And I expect none of the February coins to sell out except for the Dino coin.

It won't be long and we'll see a series of "Chimneys of Canada" - state by state with 5 coins per state... Who buys all these coins anyway? There is a myriad of releases, yet they sell out eventually with hardly any of them gaining value (it's more like most of them loosing value). So what kind of morons keep purchasing them if you can get them for less than/or issue price a few years down the road. It beats me! I only bought the Go7 and only because I got the case for the series. I doubt I'll get my money back one day though! Well, I guess that makes me a moron, too! :)
