numismo, I think the idea of a cancellation is for precisely this reason--typos happen and if someone is looking at precisely the right moment . . .

I had a similar situation with a seller several years ago. He intended to sell a coin at a $500 BIN price, but left off a 0 "$50". I never got such an offer of settlement, he wished to cancel the transaction, which I agreed to. I think I even have a thread on this forum somewhere in the archives. Anyways, "bestcrystal" has always impressed me with their quality and honesty. I have only bought several items from them, but am always scanning their listings. They were very admirable in this situation.

Yes, I was impressed with the way they handled this. They could have handled it in multiple ways. I thought I would get a cancellation request or an offer for another Morgan that wasn't a semi-key. I didn't even know it was worth what it was, I thought it was a common Morgan going for $30-$40. You know how some people are with using the words "scarce or "key". If a coin is worth a dollar more than the rest, it is a key date to some sellers.

I know I got chewed out by some moderator at a different forum for even think about not sending a coin if it was a key date listed by mistake in a hypothetical situation. Of course you know if it was them, they wouldn't think twice about sending a cancellation if they listed a 1912 V nickel that turned out to be a 1912s but if they won the coin for 99 cents with free shipping, they would demand it be shipped. funny how some people that claim they are so ethical are hardly ethical at all and state "I am too unethical to be selling coins". I personally think that even if you listed a key date or rare variety wrong and started the bidding at 99 cents with fee shipping, the hawks would catch it and a bidding war would start. For instance if I listed a 1864 small motto on ebay and didn't specify it, the variety hawks would pick up on it and try to get a deal on it. Of course BIN is something else entirely and you have to be sure about your listing. I always check for mintmarks in lots of V nickels and if you see an "S" you know what it is.

Anyhow the coin is coming and I got to figure out what to do with it. I don't really want it and want to sell it. I read my 250 post milestone email and it stated I can sell it here. I could also take it to a local shop and sell it to them for cash and trade. I am uncomfortable selling it on ebay, I like selling lower cost coins there.

Human nature at its best. People love to get on their high horse and express the highest sense of morality when they arent affected by it in anyway.

I personally wouldnt blame a seller one bit for not sending the mistake as I wouldnt want to send it if I did that, but they handled it in a very good way and its commendable that you didnt just demand the coin no matter what

He seems willing to forgo $100 on this deal. If the coin in question is worth $250 then it should be the same to the buyer if you offered $150 for the coin. Either way his mistake has cost him $100 and you still get the coin you were looking for.

I wasn't looking for that coin and know nothing about Morgans. When I clicked buy it now I thought it was a $40 coin and would had been satisfied if that is what I was sent. He sent the coin so that is that.

I am going to ensure that the seller sees this thread, and understands that the good will he has sown here will likely be returned many times over.

I actually found a 1908-S IHC that was listed as a 1908. I contacted the seller and told him.

SsuperDdave, I made an enquiry into one of the seller's other items and also passed on the word that while my purchases will probably be few and far between because I can't afford most of their items, they have certainly gained a customer in me (unspoken due to character limit but hopefully implied: also, good rep that I will pass on if asked) thanks to their handling of this situation.

We should have a "recommended sellers" thread somewhere on the forum! You know, people you've dealt with who do a great job. Especially with all the horror stories we hear from the Bay, it'd be nice to have a resource for GOOD sellers.

We do. The name of the thread is "recommended sellers". This person certainly deserves mention in this thread.

Buddycat, people get lax if they just have a "close one". If you had let the seller off the hook he'd be sure to double check his listings for a while, but eventually this episode would fade from memory. By accepting this coin and forcing him to acknowledge his mistake you can be sure that he will triple check EVERY listing for a lot longer. And when he does submit every listing you can also be sure he'll be thinking about that $250 Morgan he took a bath on. So your quick reaction when seeing his mistake is going to keep him on his toes.

Besides, the free advertising he got from this forum is way more valuable than $250. Enjoy your Morgan and don't lose a second worth of sleep!

I actually didn't hold them to anything. I simply let them do what they wanted. If they chose to refund my money and send me a free common Morgan that would have worked for me. I have done that at a smaller scale. I second guessed how I ID my coins for sale and notice the coin ID I was suppose to send to someone I already shipped an order to was still here and the coin I was suppose to send to someone else was gone and remember thinking I wrote the wrong ID on that coin. I sent the right coin to the person I already shipped an order to in a separate shipment and shipped a better grade coin to the other person for free. This was an easy decision though, these coins I bought in bulk cheap. One option would be what I did but they sent that coin so that is that. Could be worse, it could have been one of their gold coins.
