Colin Fraser, specialist at Lyon & Turnbull, said:

'This is a fine example of a Victorian gold sovereign from the 1890's.

'It is in good condition and is not worn in any way.

'It mustn't have been in general circulation very much.

The specialist scores 0/3 and sells the lad short by £80!

And presto...a new collector is born. I'll bet he'll be checking his change and collecting forever.

I am not sure, but this looks like a 1901 P minted in Perth. Spink 2010 values for this one are bullion value for VF and lower, EF 175 - UNC 250 (in UK pounds)

Yes, or some poor old guy with "Old Timers" Disease. Just grabed the wrong coins for pocket change that day.

He might be checking his pocket change for quite a while, but it does not sound like he will be much of a collector. He's selling the coin and buying video games with the money.

Coins like this are out there. A few days ago I spoke with a dealer who had been called to value some silver sets. A young woman had inherited some silver proof sets from her grandfather when he died. She had broken some of the coins from the sets and spent them at face value, calling in the dealer to get rid of the few she did not appear to recognise!

What I dont get about this story is why he is selling it ? He should keep it, it would be a great investment and if in the future he decides to become a coin collector he will regret letting go of that beauty !!
