Birds of Canada series is different. The mint did not sell as much as they intended creating a low mintage. The dragon fly coin sold out or came close to it. There will be far to much product on the market to ever create a demand for this product. Also the design sucks, at least the bird coins look nice. There are to many coins in this years release to bother with this looser. I think this coin will be permanently relegated to the discount bin.

I finally received my dragonflies as well - I tried to work out the hologram with different sources of lights.... How do you like it?

I sent mine in for exchange. Maybe I am too picky, but the gap between the hologram and the border is uneven and a bit too big on my coin. Once I noticed it, it became all that I can see. I think without the defects this will be a wonderful coin, comparing to the other coloured coins, the hologram make the colour more vivid and attractive. Edited: changed to use mint's photo to illustrate the problem with my coin.

I like the image, but I do see Shopaholic's point--definitely short of perfect. I'm less "fussy" and it won't be a deal-breaker for me. I will keep mine when it arrives. Got an email from the Mint today saying it had been shipped! (Of course, I'm about to depart on a family trip so I will just have to hope it doesn't go missing in my absence--just my luck.)
In spite of my liking for this coin, I don't know how well this will do as a series. I can see one dragonfly with a hologram having some appeal, but have to wonder whether the subsequent coins will have the same draw. There just isn't anywhere near as much variation among dragonflies as there is with birds. Not at all sure I will be buying any further ones in the series. For those of you who have it and like it, will you buy the subsequent coins?

@Dooby Rak: the bird coins have a much higher mintage than the dragonfly (Nuthatch 11,909, Woodpecker 14,282) With so many of the dragonfly coins now being returned, I'm sure its mintage will be even lower ( I think it was 80% sold before everyone started returning them, so final mintage might be 7,000 range ? ) . If you go back to read the history of the bird coins on forum discussions (before the series took off), many people didn't like those bird coins and complained about their poor quality. Sometimes the "loosers" become winners for the patient collectors : )
@RavenZcoin: I will buy the subsequent coins, especially if they are unpopular. The more unpopular, the better. My guess is the mint will get better at the hologram technology over time and then suddenly, everyone will want the early ones to complete their set. Btw, there are 5,680 types or species of dragonflies - they are really fascinating and beautiful to look at.

Would you say the same thing about the "chicken head" eagle coin. It seems to be a very unpopular coin and I wonder if I should cancel my order for them.

I finally received the shipping notice. I'm excited and hoping I won't be getting the returned/"defective" ones. Fingers crossed. Just out of curiosity...the Mint's shipping notification email has a link for tracking but doesn't provide a tracking number. How are we supposed to track? Not that it matters since I usually receive the coins the next business day (which is actually Tuesday in this case :()but I'm just curious.

You have to give it a few hours to get into the CP system. Just like if you mail a package, you can't go right to CP website to start tracking it.

You have to call the mint and ask for the tracking number. If you're lucky you won't have to wait too long to get through. The mint used to give the number in the shipping notification emails several years ago, but in the interest of improving efficiency and taking a load off their staff, they stopped doing it. I've been told they'll go back to the old system soon... Don't hold your breath.

@sw3dish ch3f, I didn't read carefully, I assumed they gave you a tracking number as the shipping notifications I received this week included tracking numbers.

Oh my Gawd! I'm speechless... Well almost... I'll let you all know if I get a tracking number with my next shipping confirmation, whenever that will be.

When I bought mine at my dealer's, I hand picked the coin. There were quite a few with marks (?) on them. One of the early ones I looked at had a series of three parallel marks to the left of the dragonfly right above the 10. After going through a few of them, I finally found one that I was happy with. I wasn't sure if it was the application of the holographic effect, or poor workmanship, but I was surprised at how so many had problems/marks on them

@rp14, no problem :)
@NuMoosematist, oh I see. Good to know. I always thought it was weird that they provide a link to track but never provided a tracking number

Then, most meadowhawks are pretty similar, ditto most darners (Common green darner is a nice exception), so I really don't see a huge number of species getting featured. I could certainly see half a dozen, though. And if a dragonhunter is featured, I will certainly want one, no matter how poor the hologram is. I will certainly be interested to see what others are featured, but I'm on the fence as to whether I will buy more of them.
