Hello folks,

I have searched this forum under Canadian error coin sub-forum and did not see something similar to what I saw on this loonie picked from circulation. Initially I thought that this was a result of some chemical spill after minting. This would explain some pitting but that does not explain the build up of metal. Then I thought it may be a product of some oxidation (rusting) process. But the metal buildup is bonded well to the base metal.

Just curious to see what this may be. I am new to this site and was referred here from another forum that deals primarily with banknotes. I am an armchair collector but consider myself as a budding numismatist.

Photos show the whole coin and close-ups from different angle. In the photograph the coin was positioned at an angle to get the best feel of depth of the surface. Any variation in colour is because of the exposure conditions (You will notice that some images so more grime than others because of the angle of lighting)

That looks like PMD (Post Mint Damage)

Would you be kind enough to speculate what possible Post Mint things might cause this?

My understanding is that acids will cause pitting.

Rusting will cause delmaination.

In this particular example one can actually feel a smooth ridge of extra layer of metal at the neck area and also near the 2012.

Thank you

Still looking for any possible explanations for this situation. Around the neck it appears to be like a layer of metal similar to how lava might have flown and hardened.

Thank you
