19x8 "p" Quarter

carnivore1975 New Member United States 1 Posts	Posted 05/03/2007 02:07 am I found this quarter in my pocket change and noticed the third digit in the date is missing. there is a very small trace of a number but I cannot tell if it is a 8 or a 9. there are no grind marks or any other kind of marks to indicate it was intentionally removed. just looking for some opinions. If this were a coin on ebay I would say it looked photoshopped (it looks like the colour was brought down onto the rim and onto the 9), but as it is yours I guess not. biokemist6 Bedrock of the Community United States 12437 Posts	Posted 05/03/2007 08:12 am More than likely, the digit was obliterated by a grease-filled die. Grease and other machinery gunk can get caught in the recesses of a coining die and it will make coin details mushy or nonexistant. These generally do not have a premium unless dramatic or interesting (dramatic would be enough grease to almost completely eliminate the design and interesting would be one missing a mintmark or the God part in the motto i.e. a "Godless" coin). BTW, it is either a 1988 or 1998 date since a P mintmark is not present on "X8" dates before 1988. I think it is probably 1998. Edited by biokemist6 05/03/2007 08:23 am Report this Post to the Staff
