Not for general circulation, but for collector items. I believe it has always been stated in legislation that, even if the U.S. $1 bill is retired from circulation, the BEP will still print them for commemoratives or numismatic items or whatever you'd classify them as. So, should Canada do the same with its $1 and $2 bills? Or, are they already doing so?

I think if the U.S. does get rid of our $1 (and $2) bills, that, each and every time every "circulating" denomination of FRNs are redesigned those two denominations should also be redesigned to conform the higher denominations, because, since there would be $1 and $2 coins, there would be no need to worry about bill acceptors accepting old or new style $1 and $2 bills. I also think that the BEP should go back and print some non-colorized Series 1996 style "big head" $1 and $2 bills and some Series 2004 colorized "NexGen" $1 and $2 bills for currency collectors who would like a complete set of $1-$100 of each of those series.

Comments anyone?

I'm old fashioned and think that numismatist should not affect to coin or banknote issues. In other words, every coin or banknote should be intented for circulation use only. I see a numismatist as a historian who just saves pieces of history.

I say no mostly because it would be too much work and money to bring them 'back'. I think it is good that we got rid of them for good, as you are constantly hearing about how much the US spends on their bills (counting, sorting, etc.).

If they circulate, then sure they could make a collector version, but other wise it would be like the mint making a 1c commemorative. (Oops, they've already done that...with crazy markup compared to FV of course . No, I understand why they do that, but if they were to do that for the bills, you could expect crazy premium.)

Nice theory. RCM mints too many collectors' versions of coins.

Eurocoin has the right idea. Mint coins (NCLT) today are like "real" fantasy coins. While technically "legal tender", they would never actually circulate as currency.

I wouldnt be surprised to see them do this. NCLT is hot, and this would be "new".
