I think different people collect for different reasons. Most people will not like to collect items that decreases in value and thus the discussion of profit. My feeling is that most people in this forum discuss the topic of profit and money just because they are excited that the coins that they purchased yesterday is sudeenly 2x the value on ebay. Most of the people in this forum also only have 2 - 3 coins at most and the prospect of getting a free coin out of flipping leave them giddy and feel the need to share their happiness somewhere. Quoting SPP's comment regarding RCM dealers promoting the hobby, I have to agree on that statement but have to change it to "some" dealers. There are dealers that I know are not out there trying to promote collecting. They are out there to gain profit from selling mint products. Just look at the discussion regarding gatewest coins. They are selling the butterfly coins at $250 a piece and they increase their pricing by the minute the moment they list the product online at the same time not allowing online orders. I do see some frustrations myself when I see some people discuss coins in terms of profits and losses only. However, I think the majority of people in this forum are not in that category.

Quote: "...It is certainly not our policy to make coins available on the secondary market in advance of their official launch..." Where did you get this from? They did not. Canada Post messed up everything. That screw up has nothing to do with the Mint. The Mint just went out and sold their allocation and ticked everybody off because they did not make an unlimited number of butterfly coins. What does mint policy have to do with a MC sell out in under 2 hours. Blame the mint for making so many MC members with their gold coin issue last year. Still has nothing to do with policy.

Read back a few pages. You've made your assumptions and expressed your opinion, as have I.

I have it the worst, I am a secondary 2 student with a passion for coins. You think I have a thousand dollars just laying somewhere at home ready to be spend on coins every year. I wanted the butterfly coin for issue price so I would make a beautiful gift for my mother on mother,s day. I don't have time to stay up until 12:00 a.m. I am not trying to flip coins I merely want to get a coin at the Mint without worrying or might be sold out hours in advance of public release. I bet after a few releases many people will get annoyed at the Mint and not buy any coins.

@CanadianCoins1999 That would have made an amazing mother's day gift! But sadly staying up until 12:00am this release would have done no good...everything was long gone by then You're right though, it is very annoying that coins are getting hard for the public to get ahold of with coins being sold out before public release date. I feel some coins should be put aside to allow the public a chance to get the coins from the mint without having to break the bank finding them elsewhere.

Everyone are still whining about ONE coin out of hundreds of releases the Mint do every year. That happen to sell out in one hour. There are lots of sold out coins available at coin dealers at slightly above list. Are you breaking the bank by paying $15 more? I am talking about the canopy and mask coin.
And how about Canada Post? Every single coin will be available at CP at list price. Except for the buttefly coin of course. Do true coin collectors only buy ONE coin for the whole year?

I am willing to bet that you are wrong and that this will happen again when the next glass coin is released also. Also, a $150 coin as a mothers day gift. My mother would have beaten me for spending that much money. You can still buy the 25 cent butterfly coin and the Fine Silver Coin - Blue Flag Iris (2013) with a mintage of 10,000 is still available. Don't tell me mothers day is ruined because you could not get this coin. I think a lot of people like this person are truly ticked because they did not get to profit from this coin. Plain and simple, nothing to do with collecting or numismatics, just profiteering. There are lots of coins to buy why are we crying over this coin? Oh Way, you can make a $100 profit by flipping it. P.S. numismatically speaking I adore this coin for its proportion of glass to coin surface and for there mix of colors which I believe will appeal to a greater number of people then the previous coin.

was staying awake till 3:00 AM twice - MC and Public release.
First time - to get only one of each 3 coins, and second - just to see how the things will develop. And I need to wake up at 6 or 7.
What to do...sometimes need make an extra effort even if you want only one coin for yourself.

Right, right. There's orphanage in our area and I wanted to get butterfly coin to each of 30 kids there for Easter. But was unable to. Now they are all crying without their present. What's a shame! Would somebody at mint think of the children?

I will just tell my mom that I was able to buy the butterfly coin for my collection, telling her will be her mothers day present! haha, kidding of course. That was a funny post though. I do think most mothers would rather have the $29.95 butterfly coin (if they are into coin collecting)... most mothers I know dislike their kids buying expensive gifts for them. Although I guess it depends what your family thinks "expensive" is.
