I understand that didn't get previously what does "dud" mean.
All those nice to have products. And great, that do not need to chase after them, or to pay extra. Sure, some coins need to be "the gems", while others just a coins.
What makes coin (or other item) "the hit"? The fact that it surrounded by many others "regular" ones. Only that way appreciation will come.

Quote: Most coins released this year have been duds. In what context? Profit margin? Investment potential? "Flipping potential"? Are we still talking numismatics here? Would you tell the artist who designed those coins, to their face that their coin was a dud? What about the photographer who won the contest and got his picture on a coin? If a class of grade 5 students draws a bunch of butterflies, but the teacher cannot make any money selling them... are they all "duds"? Quote:People look to RCM for gimmicks not history. You represent the ignorant well. The RCM commemorative coins are mostly based on history. History is what made this country. We acknowledge our past through the commemorative coins. Seeing my friend, who served in Afghanistan, get tears in his eyes when I gave him a Highway of Heros coin last year, was one of the strongest cultural links and reactions I have ever seen made by a coin. The "gimmicks" are there to draw people into the hobby, bird enthusiasts, youth, etc... not people who want profit potential... It is a sad day, for numismatics and this forum in general, if the "people" are looking to the RCM for all the wrong reasons, their wallet being the main one. Since when should the RCM, if ever, care about your profit potential, there are no publicly traded shares here... none of you are RCM authorized dealers (note, RCM authorized dealers also promote the hobby). Go to a financial online forum, because this is a coin forum, and nobody is talking about the coin itself, the hobby and numismatics in general... pathetic... \end rant...

Not all coins stay duds. Some need time to mature. I remember betting 2012 silver lunar tigers for $75 and now are selling over $120 to $150. A dud today maybe a hit tomorrow.

Again with the hostility towards flippers. So much anger here because we are not looking for numismatic perfection in out NCLT coins. The simple fact of the matter is these coins are investment collectables. The shear fact they are made of gold and silver attests to this fact. To leave profit out of the equation would be doing an injustice to our conversion. Your main problem is that you misunderstood the meaning of why we were talking about duds. The reason for pointing out looser coins was to show that most coins do not have the same potential for profit as the recent butterfly coin and regardless of profit or ROI most people are happy owning coins from the Mint. The conversation was to make a point that you should not effect policy change at the mint based on the reaction one coin has on the general public.

Thanks SPP. It's all "dud", "flop", "garbage" and "hits". The RCM might as well start putting out a series of fine silver limited edition dog droppings.

Hey, I don't see you guys starting numismatic conversation on NCLT coins, instead every chimes in here to beat on flipper.
"Oh, I'm so tired of flippers< nobody talks about numismatics"
Change the subject, don't hate.

The suggestion, at least on my part, is not about changing policy. It's about apply the rules and doing so fairly. The glass butterfly was just the latest and most dramatic example that the policies set out by the RCM are not being followed and are not working.

Quote: The glass butterfly was just the latest and most dramatic example that the policies set out by the RCM are not being followed and are not working. What policy are you referring to. The only policy the mint has is to make a profit. I don't see anything in their mission statement about being fair to the public and ensuring everybody gets a coin. Quote:Our mission and values The Royal Canadian Mint is a world-class provider of branded investment, collectible and secure payment products and services that connect people and inspire celebration. "To be the best Mint in the world..." We are committed to and will attain our vision to be the best mint in the world through the development of the following cultural values: Customer focus Excellence Innovation Being Canadian Integrity People The Mint is a for-profit Crown Corporation with a mandate to produce circulation and non-circulation coins (for Canada and other countries), manage the domestic coinage system, and provide advice to the Minister of Finance on all matters related to coinage. It also extends to the production and marketing of bullion and related refinery products and services for profit. Legislation which establishes the Mint is clear that the corporation is to conduct its businesses "in anticipation of profit". That fundamental object has shaped the history of the Mint.
