COENVVLF REX: Coenwulf, King of Mercia, 796-822. Moneyer's name on reverse: "Duda," the letters divided by a figure known as a voided tribrach moline (of three lines).

Looking at other examples this coin does not appear quite right. What do you think Philadelphian.

More text references out there than images for this particular issue, and I admit I haven't found an image to quite match this style. And of course, it would be in remarkable shape for a 1200-year-old coin. If its a fantasy piece, it would have to have been crafted using the description of all the elements of a real Coenwulf penny, but an artificial style, or style copied from other coins. If it's a straight copy, there must obviously be an original out there we have yet to see.

Well, I found a perfect match for this coin. Unfortunately, you can see where I found it:

I lack that capacity. So you found it on ebay, then?

Maybe we should let Paul tell the seller as he found it.

Alas, it is indeed one of these replicas. You can't see it in paul's pics, but if you look at the sellers pics at maximum magnification you can make out the incuse-stamped "R" to the left of the top letter D.

Here's a copy of my conversation, start at the bottom

Dear ,Sorry, he/she must have much better eyesight than both of us as I see nothing there. Perhaps they want you to think that so that they can bid on this and win it ?Please see my original (un-altered scans) and tell me honestly, can YOU see this so called 'R' ?I know my eyes are weak, I might even need glasses, but I've zoomed in on the coin and see no letter R by a D.As for withdrawing the coin, why ?If you think it's a dud, either don't bid or bid whatever you feel it's worth, simple !I have detailed the coin as best I can.I said that I don't know what it is, please make your own judgement, I can't be fairer than that. I'm not pretending to be a coin dealer selling a one off, I have no idea on this coin.I don't think it's fake, but experts out there will know.- sewell001 Reply in your email program or through My Messages

Dear sewell001,It has been pointed out to me, by someone with better eyesight than me, that there is an incuse R (for reproduction)to the left of the top letter D. Will you withdraw it now ?-

Dear ,As much as I see the comparison, mine has no dot in the second 'D'. Perhaps the copy has this to prove it's not original ?- sewell001

Dear sewell001,Hi.I suspect that I can buy your coin for £1.99 here http://www.museumreproductions.co.u...roductid=858 unless it is the real thing then it would be worth 4 figures. In both cases probably best if withdrawn, let me know what you think.Kind regards-

Dear ,I can certainly tell you the size is 19mm across. As for weight, I have nothing that will weigh it accurately. The kitchen scales hardly move ! - sewell001

Good work, rooneydog! Convenient how he/she is willing to quote a expert opinion in the listing on how it looks like a genuine Coenwulf penny, but not quote you on how it looks exactly like a known copy from Museum Reproductions (even down to the slight degree and direction of the offset strike!). Time to go up the chain of command at ebay?

My first reaction on seeing the pictures was
'this coin looks TOO round'.

I have a better enlargement of the coin if you'd like to see it, but still can't see this R you mention.
Incidentally, the info on the sale was provided to me and was added as I believe the coin to be real, I'm hardly going to state the fact that a load of randoms think it's fake, when I'm afraid I'm yeet to be convinced.
Feel free to report to E-Bay, as I haven't stated anything I don't believe to be true, I have stated all along that I'm unsure on this coin !
