I think you have to pick expedited service to make the tracking work. If you don't, the process will still generate a tracking number, but it will provide no tracking information. This really screwed me up recently. A buyer who purchased a watch off me bombarded me with inquiries and opened a case on the purchase only days after the purchase, all because of this. The process was not implemented bug-free.
If you see the shipping label has no bar-code, it's not trackable. Post office cannot scan them to register the package in the system. One way to deal with this is by bringing the lower portion of the label and ask them to stamp it at the time you drop off a package. It gets time stamped and it will serve as a 'proof of post' in case of a dispute.
