I'm not an MC member (yet) and was hoping to get some advice from fellow CCF members/followers on how to best achieve MC status without throwing CAD1k out of the window... I'd like to place a large order but ideally for some coins that have a decent chance of appreciating in or at least maintaing their value.

Right now I'm CAD700 away from reaching that status.

I've considered a few coins that should get me there:

1. Buying loads of the 1/4 oz CAD20 Lunar Snake Coin (http://www.mint.ca/store/coin/14-oz...rod1570001). Since it's the first in a series and given the nice design it should at least hold its value.

2. Buying a couple of the 1/10 oz gold Maple Leaf that was issued last year (http://www.mint.ca/store/coin/110-o...rod1300001). Again, it's the first in a series (apparently) and coins with Maple leaf designs are usually more attractive to collectors. But the relatively high mintage for a gold coin (25k) puts me off somewhat.

Most of the RCM coins are cheaper at Gatewest or Talisman (not 2 though!) which makes placing a large order more expensive than buying the coins through one of the distributors. For example, I can get the Arctic Fox gold coin from Talisman for US$630 delivered, compared to CAD650 + 3% CC foreign transaction charge from the RCM. That wouldn't make sense...

I also read somewhere that placing an order and cancelling it a day or so later will get you there. A bit cheeky though...

And I did consider the O Canada series, which I think has little chance of gaining in value (besides the fact I can get it cheaper from Gatewest).

Any other suggestions are welcome!

Consider one of the remaining hand-selected $10 gold coins. It is $1,000 but since you are in the U.S. you don't have to pay any tax so you have less invested in the coin than a Canadian resident buyer. Right now the U.S. dollar is a little stronger than the Canadian $ so when you add on the credit card foreign exchange fee it won't put you too much over the $1,000 plus the $12.99 shipping.

Thanks, I had a look at them as well. Will they hold up in value in years to come, or will they be priced at bullion one day?

the fact that the 10 dollar gold coins are still avaiable answeres that question. the 5 oz. maple leaf was the best design and best chance to increase value in the latest roundof releases.

Wait for the next coin. Last year they had a really nice birthstone coin set for over $700. I wish I had bought it. It sold out fast and sold for a premium right after. There will be other good offers. I would wait for this years fractional silver set.

The 5 oz Maple Leaf may have been the way to go too, but they are no longer available.

Even at bullion price today the $10 gold has the inherent value of $765.

There is no fail safe coin investment but I think the gold coins from 1912-1914 have a better chance of maintaining their value than the latest hyped coin du jour of current issue.

I would wait for the next releases.

If you had done this earlier, you could of pick up 5oz SML, 3 dinos, 1 penny roll, and if need be, get a 1oz subscription and it would hit the MC status

In my situation, I wanted to subscribe to the O Canada series and didn't want to keep paying shipping fees. I purchased a War of 1812 gold piece for about $570 which boosted me to MC status. I also added some Dino coins as well as SML 25th anniversary.

So far I've received my O Canada coins via Xpresspost free of charge and I love everything.

Buy the $1000 gold coin. Sell it for $1000 after you hit MC status.

Birthstone coins are not very popular... they are all still available individually at the Mint and you can find a lot in CP. The set however, with the special case, was limited to mintage 200. It may have sell out fast, but because of this mintage. Right now, there is only one on ebay: BIN at 900$ for a release price 780$.
I honestly would not bet on this one.

I was 400$ away from MC at the last release, after my dinos, hockey 20for20 and penny roll and I just bought 4x 1oz 25th SML anniversary to get the MC status. Unfortunately, it's awaiting stock now (not sure you would be interestd in anyway).
So IMO if you're not interested in the 10$ gold ones, there is no other that is worth it right now.
Gold fox? Personnaly I don't like the fox design very much but it seems to get more and more popularity... who knows?

Thanks everyone!

Here is what I did. I just called them and placed an order over the phone for 3x 20for20 and 20 of the 1/4 oz snake coins totalling $699. The lady on the phone didn't charge me the CAD13 shipping charge to the US because CAD700 was all what was needed to get me to MC status. Good customer service!
I also subscribed to both O Canada series - they have very few subscriptions left for each series. Likewise, they still have a few of the 1oz Maple Leaf anniversary coin in case anyone is interested.

Yes, I know 20 of the 1/4oz snake silver coin may sound like a risky investment, but I figured if I sell them for $41 each delivered here in the US I break even. If not, they should do well again when the next one in the series is released.

And yes, the dino II is sold out now.

Well, they released one this year for the snake and given how well it does I can imagine RCM will continue the series - which would be a boost for this one. If not, then bad luck. :)

Actually, I didn't like any of the coins, but will pick up 8 Go7 from Gatewest to complete my series.

I'm curious why you want to buy Go7 from Gatewest?
Since your MC now, why would you not spend it directly at the mint?

I agree, there is nothing more for me on this next release than the Go7. The next bird will also be popular for those who collect them, which I'm not, so it's a relief for my wallet!
