I just went through a box of pennies, and I have never seen anything like it. probably 40% of the pennies are zinc rot/corroded. and they are really bad, about a dozen of them were even crumbling, hundreds are completely covered in the green sulphate stuff. and they weren't necessarily old a lot of them had the union shield. it even felt nasty touching them, thought on what happened?

My guess is that they came from a water fountain.

water fountain- good idea... I was thinking they were outside exposed to the elements, I mean how does a 2012 become covered with that stuff already?

Some of the nastiest coins I have ever seen are in rolls of cents and that seems to be the normal too.

Hate the zinc. Unfortunately, the hoarders are bogarting all of the pre-1982 copper!
