I am wondering at what grade of coins does it become a waste of time to search? Curious minds want to know.

Thanks

With errors, there IS NO minimum grade that you would consider.
What is important is the error itself, and how significant it may be.
The only way that an error would not be considered in terms of condition, would be if it cannot be seen because of the extent of deterioration of the coin.

Bit of a problem for roll searchers, because every coin has to be closely examined, within reason.
That becomes a matter for personal judgement.

sel_69l,
Would you say the same for varieties?

John1: You have asked me a question outside my comfort zone!
Actually, my first numismatic love is ancients! Always has been.
In the realm of ancients, EVERY coin is unique.

To TRY to answer your question, I guess that would be 'yes', but that depends on your primary numismatic interest.

In any event, it is usually very difficult to search through rolls in Australia; in most cases the banks are not interested in helping you. There are only a very fortunate few that manage to get rolls from the banks.

I agree with you, sel. Unless the coin is pure road-rash crap it's always worth looking over for varieties or errors. I've found many a treasure just by searching the vg grades at my local shop -- patience and a good loupe and a couple hours later I can walk out with a small bagful of doublings, die cracks, die clashes and just plain varieties that I didn't already own. Same goes for roll hunting. Look 'em all over carefully -- extra spines, extra buds, great clashes - all lie waiting for he/she who isn't a grade snob.

i think depend of your interest , I got a box of penny few days ago and I found about 11 Wheat penny , may be not big deal but I had the time to do it ... yesterday searching little deep in the 70's with a x lens (like somebody mention before) I found a penny with a big chip in the Lincoln head ... so I'm little more interested in use the loupe now... here is the picture what I found yesterday...

Go to ebay punch in 1877 IHC and prepare to be surprised. Even the worst POS is a hundred or more.
