Just to be clear, I'm normally on a budget, but with the money I'm going to get selling off the rest of my US collection, I thought "why not?" when I found it listed by "my guy" (as a former forum member would describe his favorite seller). I'm definitely going to be stopping with purchases for a while (ok, maybe a dirt-cheap one here and there ), but I think it's worth it! So without further adieu, my gold tremissis of Byzantine emperor Anastasius!: ANASTASIUS (491-518 AD), AV Tremissis Obv: DN ANASTA-SIVS PP AVG, pearl-diademed, draped bust right Rev: VICTORIA AVGVSTORVM, Victory advancing right with head left, holding wreath and cross on globe, CONOB in ex, Constantinople mint, SB 8, 16mm wide, 1.5 gr

Congrats VK!
I love the shape, it adds so much extra appeal and gives it a classic ancient feel.

Btw for those that dont know, a tremissis is equal to one-third of a solidus.

An excellent coin, not clipped, as so may tremisses are. The temptation to shave off just a bit on that valuable gold was great, and easy to do with those thin, soft, gold coins. Nice coin!

That is a special coin to be admired in any collection.
One day perhaps I too will have an ancient gold coin of some sort, when I do I will be looking for something similar to this one. Although all gold is expensive it looks like it was probably good value. It's a high enough grade to be respectable, but not so perfect as to become silly money.
Good choice :)

Once you start collecting ancient gold, it is very difficult to avoid the 'gold bug'. Just remember that there some extremely high quality fakes out there, in good gold. Always do your research, and always be 100% sure of the seller.
I have walked straight past some ancient gold from otherwise good dealers, simply because that is not their field of expertise.
ALWAYS keep all of your purchase records under separate security. They help to prove provenance if you have to sell later on, or they are sold out of your estate.
You keep all of the important documentation relating to your real estate and your car, so why not your more important coins as well?

I don't have any gold. I have been tempted so many times but never succummed.
You have a lovely first gold coin. I look forward to seeing more from you now.
Congratulations. Regards, Martin
