Would this be considered a "Split Planchet"? I can't find any other definitions that seem to fit. It is of normal penny thickness when compared to a regular. Is it worth enough to have it certified? Thanks! Edited by Firehawk2k2 05/10/2013 1:49 pm

From doing some more reading and examining it looks as though you may be right. a blank planchet doesn't have scrape marks like that but would normal circulation cause such marks? It looks like they are in 2 main directions but there are many other scrapes as well. I still think there is a chance that it may have not been stamped on one side due to the thickness being identical to the top of the rim on a regular penny. Is there a name/classification for a coin that was not stamped on one side?
Thanks!

There is no way for a coin to be minted with only one side. You need the pressure of both dies against the planchet to form the image. Think of it as having a piece of play-doh in one hand, and trying to squash it without pushing it against something else. The marks on the back of your coin, and lack of a raised rim is a sure sign that the image was removed by sanding or grinding.

There doesn't seem to be evidence of a lip to the rim.

it does look as if the coin was punched a little off center.

Could be half of an unfinished project to make a two-headed "trick" coin.

Put it in a flip and save it until you get a chance to make it to a show that Anacs attributer or another well known error guy can look at. I like the railroad rim, but it does look like the back has been scraped.
