Quote: what would you guys say is ENOUGH pennies? That is definitely dependent on each collector. I guess I have a thing for pennies - I could never have enough. I keep digging them up at the local parks - just to keep the cashiers on their toes But my collecting focus has swung toward large cents, and that collection is growing weekly.

Banks in my area will no longer sell me boxes of pennies. It killed me the other day to see the brinks truck dolly out around 25 boxes that we were not aloud to buy/search. its pretty sad for penny collectors. I'm doing a lot more nickels now. Although I put out local ads telling people I will buy their pennies for more than face value( 55¢ a roll) and it worksd out pretty good. received a bunch yesterday from a reply to the add. :) :) :) :)

Despite the fact that we refer to one cent coins as "pennies", no pennies have been in circulation in North America for a very long time. The old Brit nomenclature stuck. Here are some cents, pennies, and half pennies ...

Merci, Sébastien. When I first got into coin collecting, a couple of years ago, my first interest was silver coins, but I have gravitated to copper (bronze) because it falls within my budget (and I'm learning a lot of history as I research these coins).
@CoinChick: Wow, that's a LOT of pennies!
When going through rolls, I spread a bunch of cents over a table top, then sweep them with a magnet. That eliminates the plated steel ones quickly.
I'm finding that most retailers round the transaction as per the government guideline.
Home Depot rounds down, favouring the buyer.
My wife purchased some items at a Value Village store recently. The total came to XX.01
They rounded UP to XX.05
My wife asked the cashier why she did not round down.
Reply was: "Oh, we ALWAYS round UP"!

Went to the bank today to pickup more nickels and got a nice surprise! Bank Teller: Hey aren't you the guy who was here yesterday picking up nickels? Me: Maybe...*smiles* Bank Teller: What about pennies? Do you want any of those? Me: Sure! How many do you have? Bank Teller: Four boxes. Me: I'll take all of them! *Big Smile*

I only use the magnet when looking for the 2006 no logo, no P. other than that I separate the 1959 and earlier into rolls and copper into boxes. I've just been busy with other things so pennies are on the back burner. At least they don't expire. Lol.

You should be using the magnet for the 2005 issues as well...

I just found a nice little cache of pennies, from an unlikely source, my childhood piggy bank (actually a duck). Included in the mix is a dozen or more AU-BU grade coppers from the 70's! Also, quarters, dimes, a 1945 nickel and a Champlain Bridge token. Alas no silver. I'll post pictures when I can. All coins were dated 1960's-1980's, however there was one 1993.

@Jerry_B: Yes, I love silver as well, and it's making more sense to collect copper, too. I occasionally buy copper coins but it's always Mexican issues, :) , because I can't find those in circulation where I live presently. I had a phase where I bought only MS-63 silver and I believe I'll start that up again.
Today I picked up the newest issue of Canadian coin news, and the change was $XX.04. The cashier asked, do you want your pennies, I said yes. (A humungous D'UH!!). Got 4 2011 MS pieces as if they were straight from a mint roll. Kept one, will spend the rest as they become "accepted". I always say that the dollar makes no cents without the cents.
