I've been looking at purchasing Silver American Eagle Proof coins to get a type set. I've looked at individual coins from $75 - $90 (not including the anniversary sets). Today, I got an offer from a very trusted source for a complete set (minus anniversary sets) from 1986-2008 for $1800. I really like the coins, but haven't fallen in love with them (yet).
For those of you who collect them... is that a good deal, or something I can wait and do better?

That looks like just over 80 dollars a coin. Most of them you can get on ebay for 50-60 a coin especially if youre willing to crack out pf69 coins. Id say its not a great deal for the offer you got, but its not a horrible deal either as it does save you the time of hunting them down on your own. You could likely save money doing it yourself if you dont mind spending the time to find them

It's not that bad but you could maybe get much better deals on ebay. Or just buy it IF you want them.

I think that you could do better with a little time and patience. Was that price in an album or in OGP with paper work.

Your question made me wonder how much I have spent on my ASE's. I have spent $2297 on one of each ASE proof, burnished, reverse, and bullion with only the 1995 w and the reverse of another year variety missing. The majority of these were purchased from the mint and one bulk purchase of the bullion set in 2006. Granted this is not comparing apples to apples but I thought I would show how the set may increase in value.

I think the big thing you are hearing and probably already know - you can get them cheaper - but you'll also have to spend the time doing it. Each and every coin is available if you are looking.

Buying individually may cost you significantly more in shipping costs as well. Sounds like a decent deal.

mmissinglink, True... there could be significant shipping costs, but you can find TONS of sellers who charge no shipping if you look... it will just take a little longer.

Well when your looking at an 81 dollar average from the initial deal and most on ebay sell in the 55-60 range that leaves quite a large spread for shipping costs per coin to still make out better than the initial deal

I've always found that it is more fun and more of a hobby to find and purchase each of the coins and build a collection. To just go out and buy all the coins at once does not interest me at all because it would not be MY collection...it would be another person's adventure that I just purchased.
The fun is in searching for the coin you need in the best condition you can afford with an end goal of assembling your OWN collection.

Thanks guys... I really appreciate the feedback and I think I'm going to jump on the deal... I agree with Foxwoods on the fun of hunting and building slowly. In this case, this is a coin and series that I really love and I can (at least in my mind) rationalize buying the set to save time and money. Of course that time and money gets poured into my life long addiction to Mercury dimes, Liberty Walking halves, Linclon Cents...

Remember Bama, it's all up to you whatever you want to do. I would buy it if I didn't want to hunt for them one at a time. It might be a little higher then what most people pay, but if you want them then get it.

Doug... That's a great deal if it includes the two anniversary sets... Does it?
