Looks like the plating was split through by something? Looks like the zinc is deteriorating with the plating missing. I have a Cent that has a piece of plating on the inside of a mint set. You can see the plaing under the coin. It is still in the mint packaging.

Thanks coop.....It looks like it was struck onto the coin.I have to work tonight ,but I gonna check it again in the morning

Coop...great images....How much do you sell the DVD for? By the way ....do you think my coin has any value? Haven't had time to really examine that coin closer...Family came to visit and have to work nightshift. Thanks :)

Kinda looks like a piece of tin foil(gum wrapper) stuck to the surface of the coin. John1

John...that's what I thought at first.I scratched it a bit with my fingernail....it's not coming of.It looks like its lower than the copper plating.I thought I seen the edges of the copper plating around the ....what ever it is ....I'm checking it out again here it a few.

It does look kinda "sunk" into the coin. Wonder if a acetone dip would answer your question? John1

John...the dip did not change that area..The coin did get a bit more shinier..

So...that silver looking piece would be the zinc showing? or maybe something that's struck onto the coin?

Could it be a Lamination Peel that fell off? Older Cents it is pretty "common" due to poor quality of metal. That was my first though, maybe the copper layer Peeled, was fell off, leaving the zinc layer exposed

From what I have been told, lamination errors only occur on copper cents, not zinc.
