I am getting them circulated, getting them from the banks that are willing to share them with me. I search through them and the rest I spend them around the city I've gotten some in change as well so they're circulating in Southern California a bit.

I have put around 30-40 into circulation. I have'nt gotten any nor do I know of anyone who has gotten any from circulation. I know some cashiers I've handed some to keep them for themselves, usually they give them to their kids or other people they know.

On my last payday, I bought two rolls of Adams Dollars.
I carry them in my truck, and anywhere I have a small bill to pay (McDonald's, post office, etc.), I spend them. Nobody has acted surprised yet, and most seem excited to see one.
When I took my truck out to the landfill I paid the $3.25 charge with three Adams Dollars and a quarter. I thought the attendant was going to hug me. He said he couldn't get any from his bank, and was most appreciative to get the coins for his collection.

Just got one (John Adams) as change here in Virginia today. I passed it along right away, and the seller took it without blinking an eyelash.

I've never seen a circulating Presidential dollar. I think my fiancee got a Sac as a gift from a student a month or so ago. We live in Los Angeles. To be fair, I pay for almost everything by credit card. I love old coins, and silver and gold coins, but I hate carrying around modern change!

They are circulating slowly here in Augusta, GA. I've spent some that didn't past muster for my collection. I've seen them in the cash drawers of a few places. For the most part people working registers don't give them out unless someone ask or they run out of ones.

I've been using the for cabs and buses here in dc. I have a small coin bag I carry in my pocket stuffed with them, quite convenient especially if your wallet has alot of stuff in it.

I've never worked a cash register, but I can imagine that if I'm working in a high volume place like McDonalds or Walmart and I have to give someone $1.23 in change, I'll probably just give them the dollar bill instead of an Adams. Why? Because there's a line of people waiting and there is a percentage chance that the person will balk at the coin or give me grief. I would think it would be easier to avoid the situation all together. I dunno. Just my nickel's worth!

I live in the Cincinnati, Ohio area and saw one in a cash register at the local Walmart. Also saw them in the cash drawer at our local bank.

Kabiye_Lady, I've spent them at the drive-ups at McDonald's, Wendy's, and Taco Bell, and they were never questioned.

Gary, my comment about the cash register was that if I were running the cash register and there was a line of people waiting, I want to move them along as fast as possible and I would be worried that some people might question the dollar coin. So therefore, I would have a tendancy to give them a dollar bill - just to avoid any problems with a long line of people waiting. I was just trying to think why people aren't getting them in change as much. On the other side of the coin, I used to pay for my cappucino with Kennedy halves. but twice, the cashiers had to call over the manager to verify that they actually were half dollars and it took some time. This was on my lunch break and I don't have time to waste trying to prove I'm a coin collector - so I quit doing that!

I'm not sure if they are truly circulating, but the fact that I've not run into any problems spending them at a variety of different stores seems to support the thesis that the coins are at least being spent once! When that 14 yr. old cashier doesn't question it, you have to figure they've seen 'em before.
I will note, however, that the only ones I've gotten back in change were at our local coin show. The fact that I don't get them as change would argue that they are not truly circulating.
Maybe we should start asking for them in change?

I've been through a few rolls, but none of the banks around seem to have any more original mint rolls. I have to get on back in change or see anyone using them but me. I did have someone screw-up my change and give me 2 SBA's thinking they were quarters recently....hehehehehe.
