All-

I know I've been asking a lot of questions here recently, but since I've started looking more seriously at errors and varieties I realized I had a lot more to learn!

This is a 2011 D LMC, pretty unremarkable except for an impressed ring around most of the inside of the design. I've seen this before (though I don't know what causes it- something mechanical I imagine), but in this case the bottom of Lincoln's bust is notched out.

The left hand side of the bottom of the bust appears normal, fading out before it gets to the impressed ring around the edge. However, the impressed ring expands inwards and obliterates the bottom edge of the bust on its right half.

Anyone know what's going on here?

As always, thanks for any and all opinions!

cheers,

This is a question I have wanted to ask myself. I see this on coins sometimes but I have never noticed it affecting the bust before. What does the reverse look like?

Actually it must be extremely remarkable if this coin is an LMC!

Well....you can tell by the "ring" going through IGWT that it is a LDS. With that being said..I have no idea what would make that kind of impression on the coin as that would have to be raised on the die. I am interested in seeing what the experts have to say about this...

DIE DETERIORATION, oops caps lock on. Die Deterioration. There. It is a worn out cent. The mint made 2.5 billion of these things.

I've seen this on both sides of the coins. Very common.
