In the close-up, you can see that the walls of the trench are undercut, which makes me think PMD, but there is no damage to the reverse and what tool could undercut all the way around the trench?

You can see the edge is caving in over time emphasizing the undercut.

It looks like it could be a lamination.

That would be a delamination with subsequent circulation.

Definitely not PMD. If it were, the reverse would show distortion on the strike. I see no evidence of this happening.
