That is one heck of a story. Man I wish that kind of history came to me. I still have to hunt it down, LOL! I bought a bunch of older notes from a local bank as follows: From the bird series; 6x$2, 1x$10 and one really ragged 1973 $2 bill, all at cost.

What percentage of the banknotes in canada are polymer right now? How often do you find birds and scenes of canada notes?

Just found these consecutive $2 stars yesterday. Their condition is nothing less than perfect.

@1967Canadapenny: Those banknotes I bought were not from circulation exactly, with the exception of the $20 bill, which I got from a cash machine. I got those bills from a local bank branch that put them aside for me.
As for your other questions, I never really see bills from the bird series anymore, except for the $20, which still can sometimes be seen in the wild. Anything earlier I'd say non-existent.
Regarding polymer notes, 3/4 of twenties are polymer and fifties almost completely polymer. Not sure about $100s but I'd say the older ones are probably mostly gone now too.
Hope that helped a bit.

My "connections" (grab it and run!! no, just kidding, a close family member is in charge of the event) have let me hunt through a cashbox for a three-day fundraiser every night. So far we're on Night #2, and the best note I've found is a serial number with 4444 in it - not very remarkable (a few bills were printed in 2006, but who cares). There's also been some decent American coins coming in.
Right now, there are equal amounts of paper and polymer $20s in circulation. I was kind of surprised! Our currency reforms seem to circulate at different rates - about a quarter of loonies found in everyday circulation are new-style, but new-style toonies barely break one-twentieth. Also, thanks to some ambiguity about melt numbers (and a horrible bank truck accident), 2012 old-style toonies are much more easily found than 2012 old-style loonies, despite a higher mintage for the loonies.
And most $50 and $100 bills being spent are polymers now - but if you asked a bank for some, you'd probably get plenty of paper, thanks to an overall slow circulation rate. They don't wear as much so if I had a million dollars I'd take out stacks and stacks of those high denominations, looking for birds (even better: hunting for wild grosbeaks!).

I'd love a complete set of birds but I don't think I could ever afford the $1000 bill, even at face.

A strap of $2's today yielded nothing interesting. Not even a star note...

I found some interesting bills in the strap of $2 bills I got last week. I thought this was an interesting number. Too bad its condition isn't better. Best wishes to... someone. This one is so sad! Gage must have REALLY been hard up. It looks like he kept it for quite a while though judging by how worn it is. Apparently this was mailed somewhere. Too bad the stamps aren't still attached. Rod Miller got a nifty stamp!

Supposedly this was a First Day of Issue and they were taken to the Post Office to document that they were acquired on the First Day of Issue...This is what my parents told me when they gave them to me after taking them in. I have not tried to check if this is the First Day of Issue - how would one go about doing that? I have always wondered if that gave them extra value and what the value would be... Pete

That information is here: http://www.uspapermoney.info/serial...b.html#part2 It is closer to the bottom of the page. So is there anyplace to go to find the value of a First Day of Issue of this series? Pete

My friend's dad was going on a business (1 day of meetings, 6 days of being lazy) trip to America and had gotten $1000 in $20 bills exchanged in preparation, and in the middle of the stack (I'm proud to say that I'm close enough to my friends to rifle through their wallets) was a flawless colourized star note! Unfortunately, he needed American cash, and I didn't have enough golden dollars on hand to reimburse him. Plus I didn't know how much star notes were worth at the time (I still don't, but apparently a bit more than face?).
