Hey coop! I think I'm on to something! Check this link out I found on ebay about sms coins or "special mint" as reup mentioned earlier http://www.ebay.com/gds/What-is-an-...99096/g.html They made these special mint coins only for certain years I guess and they were made with a different type of process. I think this coin may be one of those. Do you think this is one of those coins and maybe it was doubled in that different process or finish they put on? Again, please excuse my lack of knowledge with the doubled dies. Take a look and tell me what you think. Thanks!

You have to consider the time period. The mint had to ramp up production of coins. The silver was being pulled from circulation at the 1964 last years for the silver dime, quarter, halves. All these were removed from circulation. They coins were not even mint marked to keep collectors from needing to collect ones from all mints. The SMS were used as a short cut to save time in making proof coins. Even the West Point was making coins. So all 4 mint were making non mint marked coins. So it was not a good thing for collectors then. It was a step back from coin collecting excellence.
