Hi,

I have an 1871 Sweden 2 ore coin with multiple issues.

While the portrait of Carl XV looks perfectly normal, it seems as though almost every letter on the obverse has been repunched. Some of them look like they were repunched two or three times and some look like they were repunched over entirely different letters! Even the 'A' in L.A. is repunched. (Pic heavy below)

On the reverse, there are die cracks on the left and right side through the leaves as well as coming down from the 7 in the date. Also, all of the leaves up the right side are doubled.

Could this have been a repunch of a different coin? Is it a known variety? Or maybe someone's first day on the job at the Swedish mint back in 1871?

I collect Sweden coins from this period, but I haven't seen this much repunching in legends before. The "H" in "GOTH" is especially nice!
Perhaps the obverse was worn and needed some additional tooling in the legends before it was used again?
The reverse die looks more worn, with all the cracks, so perhaps the wreath was rehubbed? The "7" in "1871" looks repunched to my eyes.

Thanks for responding DVCollector.

Any idea why it looks like the R's were all punched on top of something that doesn't look like an R? Different font maybe? The letter underneath looks much thinner. I notice the V under the V has a different serif to it as well. And the H, well that's a conundrum all on it's own! It again looks like a different font underneath, but no idea what's with the big extra hammerhead hanging off the top right side.

Interesting for sure. At this point, I think I'm enjoying finding error coins much more than perfect ones!

There could be different letter punches, or it might be due to die wear--and the repunching was to increase the life of the die. I'm not experienced enough to tell--I mostly look for overdates. Here's an 5 Ore 1858/7.

Thanks...it looks dramatic, but it's actually pretty common.
Here's one on eBay being sold unattributed--easy to spot the 8/7. (I know nothing about the seller though)

The ebay 1858 5 ore is hardly XF.

There's noticeable wear on the hair and beard and considerable verdigris in the lettering.

Yeah--I know; it's more like aVF. When you collect overdates, you don't usually have choice of grade.
