Going through some 1992 cents looking for the "AM" I came across this penny. I'm just now getting my feet wet when it comes to coin collecting and wondered what this would be called and whether or not it's common. I drew an arrow on the pic to indicate what I'm referring to in it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Looks like the die had a small chip in it prior to striking the planchet.

Thanks Broken-Coin. I've been doing a lot of reading on varieties, chips, Cuds and so much more. It can become quite overwhelming.

I agree it's a die chip and you're right, squeaky, it's amazing how many things can go wrong in minting coins... Thank Goodness!

Good eye by the way.

Looks like a bubble under the plating. I see the same thing under the ER on AMERICA. There is a lot of split plating near the rim in other areas.
