Any idea what caused the dark tone on this '69 nickel?

Could be an improper alloy. A member from Canada has the ability to test such pieces. I believe he was looking for such examples.

The improper alloy coins we studied were the Cu-Ni coins from 1982 to 2000. Prior to 1982, Canadian 5-cent coins were basically 100% nickel.

The first question I would ask, is the coin attracted to a magnet?

I have seen "toners" of 100% nickel that looked like this.

It's probably just gunk. Never underestimate the disgustingness of coins - I've seen more than one eyelash stuck to the same nickel...

Pure nickel coins generally don't tone that colour... I would be willing to test it for you. Once you get to 50 posts, send me a PM.

Ok, thanks. Will try electroplating with copper & see if that produces a similar finish.
