Yeah, $65... don't think he checked the reverses before selling them.

Dave, yeah the obverse has been sitting on the cardboard for over a year now with negligible effect. I will probably buy a nice BU set with a bunch of FS coins to throw in there after I pop these out, but I'm not expecting much.
Rest in Peace

Sounds like the "active ingredients" have dissipated.

I'm guessing the cardboard backing was laden with sulfur in it's construction and that, combined with the perfect mix of temperature swings and humidity led to this.

I bought this set about 2 years ago, as the title states.

By the way, thank you to all that have commented. They really are great.

I will be selling them, that's why I want them slabbed. Unless somebody wants to give me $500+ for the set as is... if I can get them into slabs with clean grades (which should happen, imho) I expect them to fetch strong prices because the toning is unreal for War Nickels.

Yep I agree too, I'd expect the beautiful toning to add a point towards eye appeal. These are really, really nice silver nickels!

True, I bought a bunch of old Wyatt Raymond holders because of their legendary toning properties, put in a bunch of dollars and waited - 3 years and nothing but a touch of dark brown at the rims. Oh well.

Beautiful coins.

I was going to suggest flipping them over but it seems you already tried that.

I actually got offered the $500 price tag on another forum and declined it, lol. I think they're worth more.

I would have trouble letting go of such coins.

That is a nice set of War Nickels. I love the toning.

About 10 years back, I bought an 11 coin set that was shrink wrapped to a cardboard "coin card" with small holes punched through. This thread inspired me to look for them, but mine didn't age nearly as well. They have black tarnish spots everywhere there was a small hole punched in the "coin card". It kind of looks like they have the pox... lol

The '43-S, '44-P, '44-D, and all of the '45s are going out for grading on Monday. Going to be slabbed reverse-side up and trueviewed... god I hope they don't get bagged.

Dang! I've got about 50 or so War Nickels. None of mine can hold a candle to what your set looks like.

Very nice!

Awesome! If I had 500 to drop right now those would be bought!

There is zero reason for them not to grade except that you are sending them to PCGS and you are not a big comqny or dealer.
