I just spent this evening going through a bunch of '65 cents and feeling bug-eyed as I do, no longer trust my opinion. I'm coming to the conclusion that I hate this year, but it's my birth year. Any possibilities here?

I had the same identification problem until cladhunter brought the following to my attention. Hope it helps you.

Here is an example of the 2 attributes I look for when determining if a 1965 cent is blunt or pointed. The first of course is the end of the horizontal bar of the 5. It can be a bit tricky as most of the ends are angled to some extent. If you also factor in that PMD can cause the end to appear to be more pointed then it actually is. That is why I always check the top part of the loop of the 5. For the "pointed 5" variety it will come more to a point then for the "blunt 5" which will be more horizontal. Have a look at the pic below to see what I mean. It helps me greatly to use both the attributes to determine if a pic of a coin is actually a pointed 5. I hope it will help a few members out if they have questions on a particular coin.

The left side of picture is the pointed 5 coin.

Okay, I recently found three '65s I had set aside from my little hoard years ago (and forgot about them). Any pointed 5s?

Those last three images are all pointed 5s....

Thank goodness! So, I had picked these out about 10 years ago and forgot about them. Pretty sure they are all small beads though, but you're right, the difference is obvious.
