Here is a good one to talk about.... My uncle had this in his estate lot of coins .... It is a 1943 Jefferson ... The kicker is, it is fake... The story I was told was that a gentleman in MD or NJ made them in his basement somehow.... There was $300k worth of them but they went missing when he realized he was going to get busted.... He was making them to buy cigars. Any opinions on the value?

You are referring to a Henning Nickel. They usually sell for roughly $40-$70 from what I have seen. If you post a clear image, the folks here will be able to tell you for sure if thats what you have (if you are unsure).

Take good care of that. Trying to clean it, or any additional scratches will diminish its value.

Thanks Buddy! It will be in a coin wrap for years to come .... I wonder if pcgs will grade it? It was definitely circulated.... So the Henning story is real?

to the CCF.

Your photos are not clear enough for me to gauge the coin ... but I assume you mistyped in the message text when you wrote 1943 and likely meant 1944.

If indeed this is a 1944 dated Jefferson nickel ... and when you flip it over to the reverse there is NOT a large capital "P" mint mark over the dome of Monticello ... then you very likely have a Henning contemporary counterfeit as suggested above.

There have been many threads here at the CCF on Henning nickels ... a quick forum search will turn up ample information for you to verify the authenticity of this counterfeit coin.

It is a strange place to be ... verifying the authenticity of a counterfeit coin.

Better photos (in focus, straight on, without the plastic) and we could be more helpful.

David

David, yes it is a1944... I was only looking for coin talk ... I am away from home and have been for a couple of years... I stumbled on this site looking for info on a 1960 penny.. Since I cannot post pics of the penny, since it is in Michigan and I am in Mississippi right now, I remembered I had the nickel with me by mistake... Thanks for the info ... I will search the site for CFF
