The Ptolemys are in! Heres a picture of both next to my smallest ancient coin. They are indeed 42 and 40 but the 42mm one seems ot have a 'questionable' patina. I've messaged the guy, see what he thinks is up. I think 40mm is brass?

Ah man! Just stashed them away, so I'm not sure on the thickness. The 42 is really chunky. The 40mm is much like a Blake 2d. I weighed both using a homemade balance and one came out to 72grams +-2.5grams, the other smaller one at 42 +-2.5 grams. The bulk of the uncertainty comes from wear to the reference coins I used (42mm one weighs 1 Morgan, 1 Peace dollar and 5 1ps).

Oh my god TIF look at his bronze..it's so big. It looks like one of those professional numismatist bronzes. Who understands those numismatist guys. They only like it because it looks XF. I mean his bronze it's just so big. I can't believe it is so round. It's just out there. I mean, it's awesome. Look it's just so bronze.
How's that TIF? I didn't format it very well

You missed the best part of all. I think the song went something like this
"Green and yeller" "Green and yeller" Mother be quick ..... I'm gonna be sick and ..... lay me down to die

This one passed through my hands. I bought it on behalf of a friend, who tasked me with finding him a selection of interesting ancient coins. He like my large Ptolemaic bronzes and wanted one-- the biggest one I could find-- and this was the largest one on the market at the time I was shopping. From Edgar L. Owen. Interestingly, the measurement was off, or perhaps the stated measurement was just listed as the typical size for the series. Seller said 48mm but I measure 49.5 mm. It is somewhat underweight for the series, at 91.2 gm. Like most of the largest Ptolemy bronzes, the devices are not very crisp, and this coin has been overcleaned. An awesome coin nonetheless! I am confused about attribution and understand that there is disagreement about which coins were minted by which Ptolemy. The PtolemAE Project lists this one under Ptolemy III while other sources, including the seller, as Ptolemy II. I'm reading various resources but am not sure which represent the most current thinking. If any of you can direct me towards better resources, please let me know. (per seller) EGYPT, Ptolemy II Philadelphus. 285-246 BC AE, 49.5 mm, 91.2 gm. Obv: laureate head of Zeus Ammon right Rev: eagle standing left on thunderbolt looking right, wings partly spread, E monogram between eagle's legs Ref: Sear 7782
