They only showed a pile of coins ? I take it they just wanted to get rid of these 'stinky' old coins ! I am almost afraid to know what you paid .... Some things are better left unsaid

The other non-Ptolemy bronzes in the lot turned out to be Salonina, Severina, and Tacitus. Cool, because I didn't have any of those folks and they are not the most common.

These coins arrived without any attribution-- just sealed up in flips. That was unusual. All my other auction purchases have come fully attributed (not counting dirties). Digging up the attribution for those three Roman provincial tets was fun and I still have to attribute the Ptolemies.

I think I did well on the price. Not spectacular, but it definitely would have cost more to buy these coins individually. The lot came from Stack's Bowers.

The surprise factor of buying a larger lot without full photos and details was a thrill. Fortunately it worked out OK :) In addition to lusting for the 47mm monster, I wanted this lot because of the provenance. This is the first time these coins have left the collector's family. They were collected by Professor Eaton in the 1800's. THAT'S pretty darn cool.

A great lot! - the largest Ptolemy coins can be very expensive alone, I have a few but nothing bigger than about 50 grams, the price of going larger has always put me off.

Very nice! I love coins with a sandy patina. If I can't buy a pristine specimen I'd usually rather pick one a worn example with a good patina and character.

I don't think I would gain anything by trying to clean her, and I could lose a lot, so she is staying as is.

chrsmat71- Very nice Julian II! Is that variety rare? I'm just wondering since I saw many nice examples of this type when I did some research at an Art Museum.

i think it is somewhat uncommon, if not rare exactly. I'm not sure how it's rated or how much the rating really means for this coin?
now that bull coin is AWESOME..is that yours?

I see some corrosion pits that worry me ..... It may have been treated for Bronze disease which left these scars on an otherwise XF surface. There is a green spot between the rear legs of the bull and another on the bridge of Julians' nose that have a suspicious bright green color. I would treat it before you end up with more pitting.

chrsmat71 & FVRIVS RVFVS- Thanks for the help. But actually, it's not mine; rather, it's an uncatalogued coin in one of the many coin collections of a rather well-known Art Museum in the US. It was actually one of three of this type in very nice condition that was grouped with a number of unknown South Asian coins - I have no idea why it was literally in an old bag with some Mughal and earlier Indian coins.
