That is very cool. Hopefully the people that get them will realize what they have and maybe spark the interest of a few people to start collecting as well.

Not a good idea. For those that collect coins it would appear a great chance to find such coins in change. However, due to the price of Silver, such coins if found by the average person would simply sell them to a jewler and they would get melted. Some may end up made into a bracelet or necklace by welding or soldering to something. If found by someone that knows nothing about coins may give to their kids as play things.
There was a post some time back about all the things people have done to and with coins. Very possibly many or all the ones mentioned here may well end up like those in that post.
May as well hand them to a bum so he can get some more booze.

hey just carl do you think I do not know that. if that is what happens it happens after they leave my hand I do not care what happens to them. they are all common dates and would be classified as junk silver. I will update this thread when I get back and let you all know what happened.

@ ckrakowski
What if you happen to find one of those coins in your change, what would you do with it?

@ckrakowski

I think you're missing the point here. Just carl appears to share my sentiments. I don't doubt that you could care less about the coins you're suggesting you'll give away....good for you. If you're going to do something charitable such as this, do you also not care if it has any purpose or positive result. I maintain that these coins will in almost all certainty go to waste. Why not give them to somebody that really wants them. Don't give them to me, I don't care, but how about that guy on the last page, or some kids, or somebody that cares, but a cashier who could care less?

You are talking about a reasonable amount of silver and some of those coins will also have some numismatic value, these aren't all wheat cents we're talking about here. I think this alleged ploy of yours, especially with this thread announcement (as if one of us was actually gonna find your coins in change) is really just showboating cloaked as generosity.

I agree that these coins would be a huge deal to a child breaking into collecting. I can only imagine my 6 year-old daughter, who's only been part of this hobby for under a year, receiving a huge boost to her collection like this. So yes, if it were me, I'd give these away to a child to spark his/her interest in the hobby. But it's ckrakowski's collection and ultimately his choice what to do with it. Just like all of us have the choice with what to do with our own collections.

Somehow this reminds me of this specific XKCD: http://xkcd.com/871/

I laughed out loud at Yokozuna's reply. Thanks Ben, that doesn't happen often enough these days.

Glad I don't know any of these coins going out into circulation, ckrakowski would have trouble spending them here in Australia.

Interesting idea. I'm not sure what to think. It's nice that you CAN just throw these coins away like this, but also, like others, have said , seems like a huge waste. Again, it's your collection, so do what you wish, but I still am leery to that idea. I like what others have said: give them to a little kid to spark an intrest and tell them a little bit about the coin itself.

Catch and release! I guess the fisherman in me thinks it'll be really great if a kid catches a few cool 'fish' out there in the ocean of coinage. Fun idea!

As a person who got their start by checking out the coins that went into my drawer and tip cup as a clerk, I can say that this is pretty awesome. Will some of these end up in some silver collectors horde? Maybe. Will some end up lost, thrown in the street or worse? Maybe. But the thought that these might inspire a person to start a collection or will boost a collector who is only picking State Quarters or something and they find this treasure is enough, to me, to justify occasionally setting a few coins free.

As far as hearing back about them, unless you are engraving your email or something on them, the chance is non-existent that you will hear back about them. But, again I am speaking on my own, the thought that they might end up some place where they are appreciated is enough for me.

the reason I am spending these coins and not giving these coins to a young kid is because I do not know of any that is starting to get in to collecting.

Wow - it would be fun to get any of those in change. I'd have thought a Flying Eagle cent might get noticed - wrong color for a start!

I've sometimes spent old foreign coins that have been duplicates from my collection - never silver though. I've spent a few low grade late 19th century Swiss 10c and 20c coins on a trip there, and have spent a few dateless Buffalo nickels and one or two grotty wheat cents in the USA!
