As strange as it sounds, you may have trouble spending some of these coins. If people don't recognize the coin, they may say "We only take US coins."

I had this happen for about the first 3 months of spending the SBA dollars and even now I've had cashiers look at Presidential dollars and tell me they couldn't take them because they though they were "Play Money" or because they didn't have a date on the coin.

I'm always dropping scratched or corroded wheat cents into my spending change and having them turn down steel cents as fake or try to give me change for a dime.

Let us know if anyone questions any of the coins.

well I leave for colorado at 1 pm so I should be in colorado by 5 pm. I will update this thread when I get back on the 26th. it will be in 4 categories:

1. easy to spend. ones that are easy to spend, no trouble
2. a little trouble. where I had to tell them what denom it was but they took it.
3. hard to spend. where I had to tell them what the denom was and yes it is still legal to spend and they took it after a while.
4. too hard/not spent. coins where they either refused to accept them or I did not get a chance to spend them.

ckrakowski, I for one like your idea although warnings about the silver going to melt should be considered.

I personally like to put dateless Buffs into circulation, especially around the holidays. There's no issue with them being melted and, although they are of relatively little value otherwise, they do excite folks who find them.

Besides Buffs and the most beautiful US coins ever minted; even worn to the point of datelessness they are amazing works of art.

1856 Seated quarter
1899 Barber quarter
1928 Standing Liberty quarter
1899 Barber half dollar
1935 Walking Liberty half dollar
1948 Franklin half dollar.*

and as a bonus I will try to spend a 1923 $1 dollar large silver certificate.

well here is my update.

i spent the cents at an ihop the cashier took them looked at them and put them in the register without a word.

i spent the 1856 quarter at a rockies game buying a program. the person took it without a word.

i ended up giving the rest to my sister. I was planning on doing more shopping but I was screwed out of 500 dollars right before I left. I plan to do this again in march when I go back down to colorado again.
