The advantage to me is it turns my iPhone into a viewing screen, and I can then take photos of different aspects of the coin/stamp. It's cheap fun and I've actually seen more details. One old token didn't look pitted to me, but with this little gadget I can see many circular pits in groups. Make sure you ask if it includes batteries. I bought one like you linked and my sellers feedback was 99.91. I had asked if it had batteries and it did. For me it great to use my phone as a lighted screen, and it's portable. I thought I'd play around with this, prior to spending a couple hundred on a scope that hooks up to the computer. I wanted to see if it was something I would really use before spending the money on a scope.

@ Canadian coins that is a very striking image of the coin. Your image shows a lot of details. I like the contrasts the different shades of grey make. I wish I could get my photos of this coin to turn out this well. The more I look at your image the more details I see. The veins in the leaves are so realistic. The leaves are very well done! I'm glad I took the plunge and ordered this coin. I feel it's one that appreciation grows over time. The 2010 design looks plain in comparison. Too bad it's not a true pied fort, it would of been truly spectacular. A missed opportunity. More of the mints misinformation! Thank you, for such a wonderful photo.

I just returned the coin I received from the Ottawa Mint back to the Vancouver boutique store. The pictures shown on this site is great (large photo), however, when I take a look at my (former) coin, it is not that great... I need to like my coin, but, I had to let this go as I am not too fond with the busyness of the design on the smaller diameter coin. I wish the Mint had colorized the main maple leaf with autumn colors, keeping the rest the same... That would have been more stunning.

Well Coinplus, your opinion of this coin certainly proves the old adage that there's no accounting for taste. Of course you are entitled to hate it, and by returning the coin you have given someone else an opportunity to get one. Both my wife and I really like it! The various layers in different finishes reminds me of the real outdoors and all the Maple leaves I've recently finished bagging. @ canadian_coins Your photo of this coin is excellent!

I also like this piedfort & like it more than the 2010.
@Canadian coins, thanks for great photo!
@pocket_change50, not sure what you mean by saying not a true piedfort-both 2010 & 2013 piedforts are a 1 oz silver coins with a 34mm diameter. Most Canadian 1 oz coins have a diameter of 38mm.

The way I understood it, a pied fort is exactly doubled the thickness of any ordinary coin. Like someone pointed out early in the thread, it would be a pied fort, if a half Oz coin were in existence. Take a look how The Royal Mint does a 1 Oz an then a 2 Oz of the same coin. I feel they do it better. Still in my opinion detracts only somewhat from the coin. It's in my top 5 of favorite coins this year.

Speaking of piedfort (2013). Is anyone interested in this coin? I have extra.

I too wish it was a 2oz coin so it could be the standard SML size but double the thickness. but all in all I am very happy with my purchase! Great coin!

@NuMoosematist: I don't 'hate' the coin, just find the design too busy, considering the size of the diameter, and how much this coin cost in general. If the price was a lot more reasonable, ie. if it was a $69.95 coin, then would have kept it. But at $106.95 with GST here in BC, I find it also a bit hard to digest. Has to be right price, and personal taste. The coin looks fabulous in the blown up 3x size photos, just like in Canadian_coins photo above.

Could you return coins you bought at the Ottawa Mint to the Mint Boutique in Vancouver? I have some coins I am returning to the Mint and I could save some postage if I can return them locally.

It worked for me, as long as you have the Mint's receipt, and it is within 30 days, and you call the Royal Canadian Mint's head office (toll free line and talk to a rep) letting them know you wish to return the coin there. I guess it can be a hit or a miss.
