Good question! I have bags and bags of Lincoln Wheats, so for numbers, it's those. For the collection that took the bulk of my invested money, it's my Seated Liberty half dollars (i.e.: the cost/value of SL Half Collection = about 1/2 of my total collection's invested money).

Here's a curveball for you, considering where I mostly post and the things I'm known for - expressed as a quantity, the vast majority of my collection is World issues. The World coins in my collection probably outnumber the US issues by a factor of 10.

As the OP posted this in the main forum and not in the US section.....
I have about 7,000-8,000 (I'm not really sure :) ) coins in my collection from all countries and eras and there are only about 10 coins in total from the US. Probably about 0.001%.
But of that 0.001% most are large cents - I quite like them.

I guess the idea for the poll came to me, because over the years of members saying they don't like modern coins.
Helping out at coin shops 4 days a week, most of the collection I see the majority of the coins are modern.
From seeing my collection, I know I like modern coins. Not saying there is nothing wrong with classic coins. I think I would love to have some high grade classic sets, but in most cases the prices of those coins would stop me.
It is possible I like modern coins, because I can afford to put high grade sets together.
The poll so far is showing that half of the members have a bulk of their collection in modern coins.
As for foreign coins, I am getting to like them too. I have three albums for Canadian coins, plus a double row 2X2 box almost filled. Another album and double row box for world coins.
Maybe it is the most correct to say, for me, that I just like coins.

Of course Moe makes a good point.
Number of coins vs value of coins.
I had to think about that.
On value I am thinking my 15 gold coins would be the category of coins in my collection that make the biggest "bulk" value.
Thinking more about that, if I added the value of all my Lincoln, Jefferson,Roosevelt, Washington, Kennedy, Ike, Sac, Presidential coins. Then there is a good chance my moderns would have a higher value.
I really need to start a database, to better track my coins.

For me it would be to tuff to figure out. For example I know I have about 2,500 1943 Lincoln Cents. Many, many rolls of other Lincoln Cents. However, also well over 3,000 Mercury dimes and that total could be much higher, not sure. With over 100 Albums and most full, many boxes of duplicates in 2x2's, counting the quantity of any of my coins is just not possible.

I have more world coins than Canadian, and more Canadian than American. Because of the mildly favourable exchange rate, I sweep rolls for American nickels, dimes, and quarters, and this makes up the bulk of my American collection (in a bulging coin envelope labeled "AMERICAN CLAD"). But there are always the strange outliers, found in bizarre circumstances! A 1999-D Kennedy half was in an Edmonton downtown parking kiosk, and relinquished for free when asked - a Grant dollar coin was laying in the trunk of my friend's rental car in Sherbrooke. It's almost like we share a loosely regulated border with you guys :O

I'm not, really, just doing the "one from every country" thing over a very long-term timeframe, and most of my purchases to that end are bulk lots with little resale value. Therefore, stuff comes in but it rarely leaves.

In terms of quantity, Lincoln wheat cents. If you've been collecting for a while, I would imagine anyone would have thousands. In terms of value, approximately half of the value of my collection and money spent is with capped bust coins. Of that value, 45% is with the Capped Bust quarter and 45% is with the Capped bust halves. approx. 10% on the dimes and Half Dimes. The most money spent per coin type on average is the Capped Bust quarters. I have spent about the same amount of money on 71 CBH's as 44 CBQ's even thought the average grade of my CBQ's are much lower. I've had a long time love for them. I've never done an analysis of my collection like this before and the info was surprising to me. Good thread. Oh, SsuperDdave, as you can see, I still don't have nearly enough for the Bust Half Nut Club. I think in my mind, I was thinking quarters and halves combined. I've got my eye on three halves. That would take me to 74.

I had to go with Other for my vote. My primary collection is US copper. Half Cents, Large cents, Indian head and Lincoln cents. Together they are worth $4.22. I have another $1.10 in Two Cent Pieces.
