Perhaps this will do for 1491?

It took me a while before the light bulb came on.

Quote: I'm expecting that it will be some time before we get a 1491 and so I thought that I'd post a second 1492 dated coin. Excellent! Quote: Perhaps this will do for 1491?

Well, if someone is willing to move this thread at a cost of 370 euro (+ 15 euro shipping) then I'll let you know that this French coin is for sale at the moment. It's described as 1491. I can't find a date - perhaps it's a one-year type?

Ah, good idea. If we cannot advance the thread, at least we can discuss a hypothetical candidate!

@DL20K, is the coin that you posted a Duplessy #592? I see a similar design (D #591) that was dated "after 1491". The only end point that I know for certain would be the end of Charles VIII's reign in 1498. You are actually touching on one my frustrations with French coinage. Most of the time, you can only bracket coins as having been minted after a particular date and it isn't clear (or perhaps known) if this same design was minted until the King left office.

The seller describes it as "numero catalogue: DUP596". How certain would that date be?

Ok hmm. I'm not sure that I completely agree with that attribution; but in any case, Duplessy states that #596 was minted "ŕ partir de 1491". My French isn't great, but I think that this means "after 1491". Maybe you or someone else can confirm this?

With such uncertainly, it might not qualify for this thread, but would certainly be welcome next week in this one over here.
