Again I turn to the forum for advice. Is the following coin silver or gold? It looks silver. But it's heavy. I just want to be sure. Thanks so much.

Crikes, it's certainly not gold...gold wears pretty much untarnished to its last gram!
I think, as has been mentioned, we're looking at a Crown here?
What made you think it was gold?

Or, what makes you / made you think it's a sovereign?

Be gentle, I'm a neophyte. I thought it was a sovereign because it looks like this:

I don't have scales so I can't weigh it.

Simple test. A crown is large. 39mm in diameter. Or a bit bigger than two 2c coins side by side or larger than an Alberta $5 piece!

A sovereign is only 22mm, a little larger than a 5c

Hope that helps!

Thanks Tom. That helps a lot. It's precisely as wide as two Canadian 2c coins.
Any idea of grade?

Grade...well it has been abused so BV would be my guess.
Pre abuse it might have been GF+.

Kafka, my apologies, I keep forgetting this is not a UK forum when I respond to posts like this!
For what it's worth I wouldn't be able to tell a dime from a dollar, especially sizes, weights, composites, etc!

Quite worn, so only around a UK Fine. Which my research suggests would be an F12-15 on the Sheldon scale?

I'd say it's Fine. It's really quite worn, but some of the details remain.

Obviously a silver crown judging by the colour.
