sw3dish ch3f, your description sounds like a valid reason for calling the coin defective and from what I understand, the Mint rarely, if ever, refuses returns.

By the way, just to show how wrong a person can be, I expected this coin to be a hot seller. It's not. No action on secondary markets, at least on ebay. The Mint marketing types must be hugely disappointed, especially with 4 more to come!

By the time the 5th coin is released, you'll see Lake Superior coin appreciating to some degree, but that's all right. I won't be selling mine The mint will be happy because they sold all the ones they had. I'm sure they don't even consider the secondary market or other sites - or even their network of dealers.

Is there a photo of a defective coin that people are talking about?
I have seen several coins at CP stores and yet to come across the kind of things that are being talked about in this forum.
I am not sure if I am missing something.
I do love the coin that I have. I somehow think that this coin will have more value in the future than other coins with animals and such. This is so Canadian and US that I do not think it will compete with Australian mint products.
But then I may be wrong.

I do see what is being referred to as scratches but would not have thought by looking at the picture that these are in fact scratches in the enamel. I see some reflection. Wonder if it is the capsule.

I seen a few of these go for auction, not bad price wise but not low enough for me yet.

Just received mine yesterday , Box and second coin, I was half thinking of canceling the sub after getting the box etc, but now after seeing it and with the coins inside I really like this set, this will be a long term keeper for me.

One of the biggest duds the Mint put out last year. It is still available at the Post Office for issue price six months after release. Plus dealers have tons of them at issue price. The results on ebay recently is awful. They are selling for less than $100 when the issue price is $114. People are selling them for a huge losses. Like this on for US$71.00. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Canada-2014...em3f322372a3I am glad I did not buy any them. Great for those who think they are nice looking coins but I did not like them. Not my cup of tea. One of the problem is the high mintage of 10,000. Much too high to appeal to the general public; more to a niche market. They should have capped it at 7500. Unlike the Superman coins and the upcoming frog coin which have broad appeal. The coin market can not absorb coins with high mintages that have limited appeal to the general public.

I would say this series had a lot of potential.
1. The Great Lakes are very well known, but maybe not that much of interest. 2. The semi-transparent enamel finish. I like it, part of it is light blue and others parts of deep water are "deep blue". 3. The Box. It's nice, but would have been better! This is the cheap version of the maple wood boxes. Not that it's bad, I really like the design, but a series at this price tag should have got a better box. The protective cardboard is very nice tough...! 4. The COAs... This one is really easy to do, with no additional cost, but I was really expecting to have the actual Great Lakes picture on one side of the COA, to display the COA showing all five Great Lakes on the lid, with the coins below in the box. Like the Go7 had.
Anyway, I personally really like them. I like enameled coins, and these ones are very nicely done.

I would agree with MoneyPenney:
The series will not appeal to the wide public. Too specific. The coins look nice, but see....the design is not "sharp". For most of the people it will look like "5 coins with something different shaped blue on them". I think, the touch of the proof finish to the "ground" wouldn't harm.
Now from other hand: I do like the series. Why I bought it, when actually my target is to limit purchases: because it not next something (animal, glass item, Maple Leaf...whatever), but solid themed item, contains 5 coins over 3 years and nicelly "wrapped". And the price has dropped? Do not care....price dropping for most of the coins. Popular "Glass coins" - the Lady Bug only....please come and take the Glass Buttefly in mint condition for $150. (Btw, I think, that the amount of "perfect", non broken Butterflies and Bumble Bees, much less then 10.000 - too breakable were the wings).
