I guess I'm too much of an "old fashioned" collector, I just don't understand the angst over a box or the number of boxes available. The availability of a box would never entice me to purchase coins I wasn't already interested in, nor would the lack of a box keep me from purchasing a set/series of coins that I liked. Two examples: 1) I'm not interested in the Great Lakes series of coins and no box (except, maybe, one in solid silver ) would have changed my mind. 2) I liked the 2013 Bald Eagle coin series and purchased each of the issues knowing that there wouldn't be an RCM box for the set. Just my approach to the hobby...it's not for everyone!

Hi commems! With all due respect, it`s not about whether one wants the Great Lakes coins or not. Obviously if one dislikes them, one will not buy them with or without a box. However for me it`s all about the principle involved. When the RCM promises a display box to those who subscribe to any series, then I believe the mint should abide by the original published limit of subscriptions offered to its customers. It`s really about integrity. In the case of the Great Lakes subscription. collectors should not have to wonder whether there will be 1,500 or 10,000 boxes, or any number in between. It`s clearly stated that there will be a limit of 1,500, pointe finale!

I don't think this is 'angst' over mintage or a fixation on mintage. Unless you are a flipper, yes mintage is not a primary factor but it is a consideration for most collectors. Recent collector coins are limited mintage items and part of their perceived value comes from lower mintage numbers. Older numismatics are also valued in part because of rarity. With very few exceptions, higher mintage means resale lower return. If I had the choice of owning a set of which there were 1500 versus a set that was produced to 4000, I would choose the former. Who wouldn't? Would I buy a coin I didn't like based purely on mintage? No. But if I like the coin (or set) then I'd prefer it to be low mintage if for no other reason than to increase any potential value if I were to sell it in the future. And yes, I think that the 5 lakes in a combined presentation box will be more desirable and display better than five separate coins in clamshells, so even though the coins will be produced to 10,000, the numbers of boxes is a consideration. My only other issue with this mintage question and what you guys seem to be missing, is the varying information emitted by the RCM and its representatives. I don't think it is too much too ask that we, as consumers, be given factual mintage so that we can make informed purchasing decisions. I have tons of coins in my collection that I bought because I liked them and many were unlimited mintage items. The difference is, I knew that when I bought them.

I personally really like these coins would like to collect the whole boxed set. The mintage numbers have nothing to do with whether I like them or want to collect them, but the mintage has EVERYTHING to do with whether I am going to shell out $114.95 a piece for them. The desire of the coin is aesthetics , the desire of collecting the set is to have a beautiful collection in a nice presentation box. The desire to pay large amounts for each coin, is to have something few other people have. Lower the price to $59.95 RCM and you can make as many as you like

I agree with NuMoosematist. It's not about how nice is the coin, that you like it and you buy it. We want RCM to be clear and honest as any other company we deal with. If they would have announced 5,000 boxes maybe I'd have bought it (I like the coins) but since they announced 1,500 boxes I want my box to be part of the 1,500 boxes, very simple to understand. I don't accept 1,501 boxes. It's all a matter of principle.

Quote: CC-Ottawa At the risk of opening another can of worms, how is it that 'all people know have a 5000 boxes mintage'?
I can't find any official notification from the Mint that the duck sub was limited to just 5000.
Well, it wasn't me for sure as I didn't order any Ducks subscription. But according to the old thread, it was clearly assumed from the beginning: https://goccf.com/t/143517&whichpag...hTerms=ducks

We already know the Mint has flip flopped on other things such as boxes and not boxes , allegory comes to mind and there are other examples, so maybe by putting 10,000 on the mints site for both the coins and the Subs they can do what ever they want later... or its just a error on the mints website...or its 4000 Subs or its 1500 subs ...who friggen knows at this point.

I just finished talking to a customer service rep at the mint and was told they are almost finished selling the single coins. When that is done it will determine how many sets will be for sale. She could not give me a number on the sets Mintage. She indicated they should all ship by the end of nov. when I brought up the 1500 Mintage twice she just ignored what I said. I wish the mint would get there act together.

pocketchange 50, I don't the think the person you spoke to has any information about the subscriptions.
What you were told does not even make sense.
If "...they are almost finished selling the single coins...", how will this enable the mint to "...determine how many sets will be for sale."...? It sounds ridiculous!
She ignored the 1,500 number you brought up because she could not bring herself to say: "First, I've heard of it, I don't really know."
Don't forget these reps are kept completely out of the loop and are trained to ignore important customer issues.
