Spain maravedis (cobber cob coins)... counterstamped/revalued as most are. These are very low grade - you actually overpaid a bit. They dig up thousands of these in Spain, many in quite nice condition, if with varying degrees of accreted dirt. A quick search on ebay will show many examples.
