Ok I got this recently and have doubt its a fake. It weights 25.45g where as the original spec is 27.45g according to this,
http://www.coinfactswiki.com/wiki/F...e_1653-B_ecu
I think the loss of 2g doesn't correspond with the wear.

The coin looks kind a yellowish and is non magnetic. However my two N52 magnets rolls off the coin real quickly where as they rolls off slowly on my other known good silver coins. Also doesn't sound silver. The edge is plain and fits the specs.

Also I see lot of chipping ( not the adjustment marks) on the surface and on edges and the fields are grainy similar to another fake I own. To me it looks like some gold/yellow color paint is coming off the coin.

Any idea what type of metal alloy being used here ?

The chipping suggests the metal is brittle, which means it most likely has a high Tin content.

I'm sure SwamperBob has some knowledge on counterfeit Ecus, which were rather plentiful (though you generally see more of the later 1700s dates than dates this early?)... Also, message ColonialJohn about this. If you've seen his posts, he of course (like SwamperBob) is rather devoted to contemporary counterfeits, and I believe he's mentioned that Ecus are one of his specific areas of collection/study.

Nice earlier example, at any rate... definitely some kind of wash or similar effect that is now more than half worn off.

What had you paid for it?

Kind of assumed this was just a piece in your collection (for a while) you were looking for info on, rather than a new purchase you were trying to validate after the fact. I would say that if you were looking for a genuine example, this (on first guess) should not have been the coin you bought.

I paid $150 for it. I have bought from this seller before and was satisfied with 3 previous purchases. His pictures has a red background and the stains were not visible until I had the coin in hand. Also he hasn't replied to my questions about the weight and edge. Big red flag I know. I don't normally buy if the seller doesn't provide answers but again I decided to buy anyways since I had bought from him before.
