I collect type sets from every county which features Queen Elizabeth on their coins. I am trying to figure out Belize. Since 1973, Belize has issued coins featuring the young crowned portrait of the Queen
and has not updated the effigy since except on the dollar.

However my Standard Catalog of World Coins has a listing for a new portrait for each coin starting in 1992 that appears to be identical composition and design.

I can't find any information on what the difference between these two types are.

For example, Belize has two aluminum 1 cent coins, KM#33a (1976- ) and KM#114 (1992- ).

At http://en.numista.com/catalogue/belize-1.html it states that...
"Newer Issues (1992 to date) sometimes referred to as KM#114"

So what if any is the difference between these types? If there is no difference, why are they assigned two catalog numbers? I hope they are the same because that is fewer coins to buy!

1 cent, aluminum
KM#33a 1976-
KM#114 1992-

5 cents, aluminum
KM#34a 1976-
KM#115 1992-

10 cents, copper-nickel
KM#35 1974-
KM#116 1992-

25 cents, copper-nickel
KM#36 1974-
KM#117 1992-

How old is your standard catalogue?
I thought this problem had been removed with the latter editions.
It doesn't make my 38th ed. but may have reappeared.

The Krause compilers presumably had heard some kind of indication that the designs of all coins had changed in 1992, so allocated them new numbers. When they discovered that the designs had not changed after all, the new numbers were abolished and the listings merged back into the previous types.

The NGC database uses up-to-date Krause catalogue data. The NGC entry for Belize KM 33a goes from 1976 up to 2010.

KM#115 is still listed in the 39th ed. but the others have been removed.
