A few days ago I bid on a 1921-S Walking Liberty PCGS VG-8. After checking the greysheet which has it at $45-$52 and then the Numismedia online Fair Value which is at $83.00

I placed a bid at $70.00 and after buyers premium of $14 I was at $84.00 Previous prices have been anywhere from $52 too $82.00 so I figured I was right in line with the going price. Today I was outbid.

The same coin on E-Bay are selling for $139.95. Why is there such a wild differences in prices?

I have found that key dates don't follow price guides or grey sheet.

So how is the selling price determined?

Past auction realized prices plus a premium of some amount when buying from a dealer. That's what I have seen on ebay anyway, waiting to be sold to someone with no patience to wait for one to come up in a true auction.

Availability + Desire + Urgency + "fill in the blank of a hundred other variables = value. This is guaranteed to change constantly. To make the equation simpler.... how bad someone wants to sell + how bad someone wants to buy determines the final price. It is like trying to publish a book of stock prices....even if you published a new edition every day it wouldn't be perfectly accurate.

It must have had good eye appeal and someone wanted the coin more than you did.

Something is "worth" as much as someone else is willing to pay. Value is subjective on ebay and all over the world.
